Role Overview
As a General Cashier, you will act as a brand ambassador at Fairmont The Norfolk, overseeing cash handling and remittance operations across Front Office, Food & Beverage, and other departments. Your responsibilities include verifying and managing cash transactions, preparing bank deposits, maintaining foreign exchange rates, and supporting financial reporting and compliance duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Retrieve and verify remittance envelopes from Front Office and F&B personnel along with a witness, ensuring accuracy against daily records.
- Jointly count cash, cheques, and credit card vouchers and reconcile them with computerized remittance reports.
- Prepare bank deposits for all received cash and cheques, ensuring amounts remain unaltered.
- Organize credit card sales vouchers by issuing company, balancing totals, and readying them for daily banking.
- Maintain updated transaction records by credit card company on a monthly basis.
- Obtain and input current foreign exchange rates from banking institutions into the Property Management System (PMS).
- Authorize and disburse petty cash following approvals from the Cluster Director of Finance and compile related disbursement summaries.
- Manage and balance your own cash house bank, preparing periodic recapitulations.
- Compile detailed daily reports covering all cash collections and payments for Income Auditor and Finance Manager review.
- Generate cash and foreign exchange control reports as required by law.
- Ensure cash advances are only advanced with authorizations from the General Manager and Director of Finance.
- Participate in surprise cash counts to maintain control and accuracy.
- Collaborate with Finance Manager to monitor outstanding bank drafts and follow up on clearings.
- Possess in-depth knowledge to supervise, correct, and demonstrate assigned accounting and finance workflows to standards.
- Maintain flexibility by rotating through different sub-departments within Accounting & Finance or other hotel departments as assigned.
- Stay fully informed about hotel services and facilities to provide excellent support.
- Provide change to Front Office and F&B clerks, planning adequately for peak periods such as holidays.
- Reimburse Front Office Clerks for approved expenditures and manage custody of unclaimed wages.
- Train team members (Heartists) in skills such as detecting forged notes and verifying financial instruments for operational efficiency.
- Assist with inventory counts of operational equipment quarterly, biannually, and annually.
- Fulfill additional duties as assigned by the Finance Manager.
- Coordinate with payroll and external providers to ensure compliance and timely processing of local pension and other levies.
- Verify hotel payroll accuracy and maintain detailed employee financial contribution records.
Candidate Qualifications
- A Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline.
- At least 2 years' experience as a cashier, ideally within a hotel or hospitality environment.
- Proficient in POS systems and financial management software.
- Strong numerical aptitude with precision in handling significant cash volumes.
- Excellent organizational capabilities and meticulous attention to detail.
- Solid understanding of financial regulations and standard cash handling procedures.
- Exceptional customer service orientation focused on guest satisfaction.
- Ability to perform efficiently under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Fluent communication skills in English.
- Knowledgeable about foreign currency exchange processes.
- Willingness to work flexible shifts, including weekends and holidays as needed.
- High integrity and reliability in managing financial transactions.
