Job Overview
The role involves delivering essential technical support to fire engineering and surveying teams across the UK and Ireland. The Fire Surveyor conducts on-site inspections during construction and operational phases, including external wall, fire stopping, fire compartmentation, and fire door surveys. Occasional fire risk assessments are also part of the work. Reporting lines are to the Lead Surveyor and Divisional Director.
Responsibilities
- Perform surveys and prepare technical reports on active and passive fire protection systems.
- Evaluate compliance with Irish fire safety legislation and standards such as TGDB, BS 9991, BS 9999, and related Irish/British Standards.
- Maintain and update the technical knowledge base for passive fire protection.
- Inspect construction sites throughout project phases to identify compliance issues with Fire Safety Certificate approved designs according to inspection plans.
- Produce timely reports highlighting construction-related issues found onsite.
- Review and respond to contractor feedback until issues are resolved.
- Participate in inspections of licensed premises for liquor licensing purposes.
- Conduct external facade assessments to align with industry standards.
- Provide third-party oversight for fire stopping and compartmentation installations.
- Perform visual surveys of fire doors.
- Manage own client portfolio and strive to exceed client expectations.
- Deliver continuing professional development (CPD) presentations internally when needed.
- Stay current with industry guidance and product updates, sharing insights to support continuous improvement.
- Regular travel to client sites for surveys and meetings is required, including potential overnight stays.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Degree in Building Surveying or a related field, or equivalent practical site experience.
- Possession of a full Irish driving license and access to a personal vehicle.
- Basic knowledge of fire safety design and guidance across various building types.
- Experience with intrusive external wall surveys is preferred but not mandatory, applicable to various structures including high-rise residential, commercial, retail, and historic buildings.
- Preferred but not essential experience in fire compartmentation surveys for internal fire stopping, with guidance based on manufacturer literature.
- Proficiency in authoring technical reports using digital tools and Microsoft Word based on site inspection data.
- Ability to work independently and effectively manage one’s workload.
- Eagerness to enhance skills leveraging team resources and expertise.
- Basic familiarity with fire risk assessment processes is advantageous but not required, alongside general awareness of risks and hazards in the built environment.
- General understanding of construction methods, fire performance of external wall materials, and cavity barrier installations.
- Knowledge of internal passive fire protection products, testing regimes, and correct application per manufacturer guidelines.
- Experience with refurbishment projects and coordinating contractor activities onsite.
