You will contribute to building applications that deliver precise, relevant insights and recommendations for sellers operating on Walmart Marketplace and Omni platforms.

Role Overview

The Distinguished Engineer role is a prestigious individual contributor position at Walmart. Joining the Marketplace team within Growth Tech, you will develop critical services enabling millions of sellers to onboard and transact with Walmart. Your responsibilities include coding, system design, architecture reviews, and addressing complex technical challenges. Your deep knowledge in distributed systems, API design, platform engineering, combined with an AI-first approach, will be essential.

This impactful position entails leading technical vision and implementation of key cross-cutting services facilitating Seller onboarding through Seller Center UI and APIs, serving as a technical role model for standards and quality.

Technical Ownership

The Seller Acquisition & Onboarding team designs and scales the worldwide platform supporting the entire seller entry journey to Walmart Marketplace. This includes developing robust acquisition funnels, automated onboarding workflows, and integrations spanning cloud microservices, seller portals, and AI-powered analytics.

You will own the architecture, design, development, and delivery of the seller onboarding experience—addressing distributed systems complexities, API optimization, and establishing global architectural guidelines to support international growth.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead comprehensive technical designs for complex projects encompassing API definitions, UI interfaces, data models, distributed system topologies, and cross-cutting concerns.
• Promote platform unification via creating and maintaining reference architectures, design patterns, and implementation standards.
• Assess and adopt appropriate technologies, frameworks, and cloud-native architectures balancing Walmart-scale trade-offs.
• Write and review RFCs and architecture decision records to institutionalize technical direction.
• Produce production-quality code, conduct thorough testing and seamless production deployment.
• Tackle challenging problems ensuring performance, reliability, and scalability.
• Quickly prototype innovative solutions leveraging AI-enhanced workflows and transition them to production-ready systems.
• Perform in-depth code reviews to elevate team technical standards.
• Manage the complete software development lifecycle including monitoring and observability.
• Lead root cause analysis and remedial actions for critical platform incidents.
• Challenge design assumptions early to mitigate costly mistakes.
• Dissect ambiguous problems into structured technical plans and align stakeholders.
• Design systems for resilience; define and uphold non-functional requirements.
• Implement advanced monitoring and observability tools to drive continuous improvements.
• Create operational documentation and runbooks empowering team confidence in service management.
• Drive AI-forward innovation: integrate AI/ML capabilities for intelligent monitoring, onboarding automation, anomaly detection, and more.
• Utilize AI-based developer tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Wibey, LLMs) daily to accelerate design, code generation, review, testing, documentation, and incident analysis.
• Champion and model AI-augmented engineering practices through demos, mentoring, and documentation.
• Partner with leadership to prioritize AI investments for maximum impact across teams.
• Contribute broadly to Walmart's responsible AI system design and operation strategies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, software engineering, or related discipline plus 6 years of relevant software engineering experience; OR
• At least 8 years of software engineering experience without degree requirement.
• Preferred: Master’s degree in related fields with minimum 4 years software engineering experience.
• Valued: Experience designing inclusive digital experiences aligned with WCAG 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility best practices.
