Role Overview
Embark on a rewarding career within Justice by joining Ventia as a Custody Officer at Kalgoorlie Courthouse. This role focuses on safeguarding individuals in custody, ensuring their dignity and welfare, and facilitating the efficient functioning of the justice system. You will be part of a supportive team engaged in court security, prisoner transport, and secure medical escort services, with varied duties each day.
Training and Career Development
The position includes extensive structured training with five weeks of paid instructional time before operational duties commence, leading to a funded Certificate III in Correctional Practice. No prior experience in custodial work is necessary, and there are clear progression pathways, including senior and specialist supervisory roles.
Compensation and Benefits
- Training hourly wage of $27.35
- $29.50 hourly pay upon completing training
- $30.93 hourly rate after 12 months and acquiring the Certificate III
- Government-endorsed Western Australian State Government Pay Contribution Allowance of $256 per fortnight before tax
- Guaranteed minimum working hours under the Enterprise Agreement
- Premium overtime rates for work beyond 7.6 hours daily, pre 5am or after 7pm, 175% base rate on Saturdays, and 200% base rate on Sundays
- Annual regional allowance of $5,943 paid fortnightly
- Meal allowances for shifts exceeding 9.6 hours or overnight duties
- On-call allowance of $25.73 daily where applicable
- Officer In Charge allowance of $3 per hour for additional responsibilities
- Paid travel time and allowances for approved regional assignments
- Parking reimbursements as applicable
- Uniforms and footwear supplied
- Paid breaks and time off in lieu options
- Five weeks annual leave for shift workers
- Ongoing paid training and refresher courses
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and transport detainees safely
- Maintain security during court sessions
- Perform welfare checks and ensure duty of care
- Manage difficult situations with professionalism and composure
- Accurately complete reports and maintain records
- Collaborate effectively within the operational team
Eligibility and Requirements
- Availability for full-time training, Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm
- Commitment to complete the Certificate III over 12 months
- Australian citizenship or permanent residency
- Demonstrated respectful, resilient, and professional demeanor
- Successful completion of pre-employment medical, fitness, and background screenings
