Job description
Role Overview
The Completion & Well Intervention Engineer provides technical expertise and operational support for completion, workover rig, and rigless completion activities. Key responsibilities include preparing and reviewing completion and workover programs, procedures, and Authorization for Expenditure (AFE) budgets. The engineer also mentors field engineers and participates as a technical advisor at wellsites during critical operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with subsurface and production teams to ensure completion and workover plans align with project objectives and requirements.
- Conduct detailed design reviews of the Completion Basis of Design (BoD) and validate hardware configurations for compatibility and compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
- Evaluate current well conditions, confirming well integrity and preparing post-completion/workover well status updates.
- Develop operational flowcharts, contingency plans, and execute final equipment design checks, including stimulation and production compatibility with technical data analysis systems.
- Create assembly instructions, drift and gauge programs, and pressure testing procedures for downhole tools prior to running in hole (RIH).
- Determine optimal fluid density and composition to protect formation integrity and control fluid losses.
- Review and assess slickline, wireline, fishing tools, cement plug setting programs, and remedial cementing activities in compliance with high-pressure treating standards.
- Ensure adherence to Integrated Project Management (IPM) standards for simultaneous activities and barrier requirements during BOP removal and Christmas Tree installation.
- Lead preparation and technical oversight of completion/workover programs, procedures, time estimates, and AFEs.
- Coordinate with all relevant parties including drilling contractors, completion teams, wellhead specialists, and service vendors.
- Participate in service company selection, cost control through program vs. AFE analysis, technology evaluation, and operational risk assessments.
- Utilize internal knowledge systems for sharing best practices, lessons learned, and technical alerts; participate in Hazard Analysis and Risk Control (HARC) and submit requests for standards exemptions when necessary.
- Track daily operation progress, quality control of reporting, cost management, and monitor non-productive time trends.
- Conduct engineering studies to address recurring completion hardware and operational challenges.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Petroleum, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
- Preferably hold valid IWCF or IADC Well Control Certification.
- Additional certifications in drilling engineering, well integrity, project management, or risk management are advantageous.
- 5 to 8 years of relevant experience in drilling, completion, workover, or well intervention engineering within the oil and gas sector.
- Proven expertise in preparing and reviewing well proposals, drilling programs, completion and workover programs, cost estimates, and end-of-well reports.
- Experience providing live operational engineering support and real-time solutions during rig activities.
- Familiarity with conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and promoting performance improvements.
- Strong coordination skills working with service companies, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams.
Technical Skills
- In-depth knowledge of well construction and intervention processes.
- Expertise in drilling, completion, and workover operations, including well control and integrity management.
- Understanding of casing design, cementing, directional drilling, and completion equipment specifications.
- Competence in risk assessment techniques such as HARC, HAZID, PRA, and JSA.
- Proficient in project planning, scheduling, cost control, and compliance with industry standards.
Behavioral Competencies
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Effective interpersonal communication with stakeholders at various levels.
- Ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams and interface with customers, contractors, and service providers.
- Excellent organizational, planning, and reporting skills.

- Familiarity with well control and emergency response procedures.
- Experience participating in incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action implementation.
- Engagement in quality assurance, operational integrity processes, and safety compliance activities.
Preferred Industry Experience
- Background with leading oilfield service firms or Exploration & Production (E&P) operators.
- Experience supporting both onshore and offshore drilling operations.
