Role Scope
The Commercial Director is tasked with crafting and executing commercial strategies aligned with company and Hyperscale Business Unit objectives focused on accelerating growth. The position aims to broaden and enhance the company’s commercial ventures, generating revenue and driving sustainable expansion.
Key Responsibilities
- Formulate and implement commercial initiatives supporting overarching company and Business Unit growth targets.
- Perform thorough market research and analyses to develop comprehensive business plans identifying commercial prospects such as expansion and development.
- Assess client needs to ensure existing clients receive excellent service and support.
- Prospect new clients while nurturing ongoing client relationships.
- Establish and sustain profitable partnerships with critical stakeholders.
- Track commercial activity performance against key indicators, reporting findings to senior leadership.
- Contribute to financial goal setting and manage budgets accordingly.
- Support daily business management and development activities, including department audits and process evaluations.
- Collaborate across departments to ensure cohesive operations.
- Lead, mentor, and develop the commercial team to build necessary skills and resource adequacy.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to analyze costs and value engineering concerning regional projects.
- Lead the Hyperscale Business Unit through commercial challenges and strategic decisions.
- Maintain consistent growth trajectories while skillfully navigating market fluctuations.
- Make critical decisions affecting the future direction of the Hyperscale Business Unit.
- Engage new clients and advise senior management on untapped market opportunities.
- Achieve and surpass key revenue, retention, customer satisfaction, and growth targets.
- Oversee contract management to ensure contribution margins are met.
- Ensure optimal allocation and utilization of commercial project resources within the business unit.
- Review cost plans and estimates submitted by construction teams.
- Provide comprehensive contract and commercial support to construction teams, especially pre-project initiation.
- Offer guidance and mentorship to Quantity Surveying and administrative staff.
- Validate tenders and construction budgets, enforcing compliance and governance.
- Monitor monthly cost reporting and liaise with finance to maintain validated margins.
- Advise and oversee dispute resolution or claims processes within the business unit.
- Evaluate correspondence from clients, design teams, and subcontractors to identify contractual issues and respond accordingly.
- Develop and implement revenue-driving strategies to foster business growth.
- Manage the business unit’s risk register and facilitate related workshops.
- Interpret market trends and adjust strategies in response to industry changes.
- Review contracts to ensure compliance standards.
- Oversee cash flow management for projects and the business at large.
- Analyze trends within projects and business operations to inform strategy.
- Enhance and implement best practice commercial processes and accurate budgeting.
- Integrate project stakeholder input, ensuring clear, agreed objectives on costs and schedules.
- Identify and manage project risks and provide monthly issue and risk reports.
- Manage stakeholder communications across clients, supply chain, and project teams.
- Perform all associated duties, ensuring alignment with other business functions.
- Comply with Mercury Engineering’s Code of Conduct.
Essential Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in quantity surveying, building/construction, or civil engineering coupled with at least 10 years’ relevant experience in reputable construction contracting.
- Strong problem-solving skills combined with the ability to foster collaborative relationships.
- Proven expertise in providing commercial support, managing projects, and maintaining commercial discipline throughout project lifecycles.
- Experience in mentoring and developing project teams on commercial matters.
- Willingness and ability to travel as required.
