Job description

Overview

Marriott International seeks a Chief Accountant based in Kampala, Uganda, responsible for managing daily general ledger activities and supporting clients in comprehending these processes. This role focuses on accounting activities including account balancing, reconciliation, reporting, and resolving discrepancies.

Core Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and execute assigned accounting projects and tasks.
  • Oversee and follow up on Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) audits across all property accounting areas.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws regarding fraud and collection procedures.
  • Produce accurate and timely reports and presentations as required.
  • Analyze data and results to identify optimal solutions and solve problems effectively.
  • Compile, code, categorize, calculate, audit, and verify financial information and data.
  • Reconcile credit card ledgers meticulously.
  • Review contracts for groups and conduct credit reference checks on direct billed groups as necessary.
  • Set and exceed departmental goals including performance, budget, and team objectives.
  • Develop and implement prioritized work plans to organize and complete tasks efficiently.
  • Submit reports within established deadlines to meet timely delivery.
  • Accurately document profit and loss statements.
  • Monitor and ensure timely collection, accrual, and accuracy of all applicable taxes.
  • Maintain strong accounting and operational controls to protect company assets.
  • Complete all period-end financial functions punctually.
  • Provide guidance on accounting, budgeting policies, and effective financial resource utilization to other organizational units.
  • Maintain updated knowledge of relevant financial systems, procedures, and regulations, including return check, gross revenue report, write-off, and consolidated deposit procedures.
  • Utilize computer systems and software to develop financial spreadsheets, enter data, and automate processes.
  • Evaluate compliance with laws, regulations, or standards using informed judgment and relevant data.
  • Lead and motivate accounting teams by demonstrating integrity, influence, and sound financial decision making.
  • Foster a productive work environment, delegate tasks effectively, and manage deadlines.
  • Be accessible and maintain visibility within areas of responsibility.
  • Manage workplace diversity and promote employee satisfaction and customer service quality.
  • Support employee development through mentoring, training, coaching, and counseling.
  • Train staff on accounts receivable posting techniques.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, peers, and subordinates via multiple channels.
  • Practice personal integrity, effective listening, confidence, energy, and enthusiasm in daily work.
  • Handle group and interpersonal conflicts appropriately.
  • Keep relevant stakeholders informed and updated promptly.
  • Manage time efficiently and demonstrate strong organizational skills.
  • Present ideas and information clearly and concisely.
  • Apply problem-solving methods for decision making and follow-up.
  • Conduct collection calls if needed.

Candidate Profile

  • Holds a four-year bachelor's degree in Finance and Accounting or a related field with no work experience required, OR
  • Possesses a two-year degree from an accredited institution in Finance and Accounting or related area with at least two years of professional experience in finance and accounting or a similar domain.

Position is full-time, based at Ggaba Road, Kampala, Uganda (not remote). This is a management-level role under the Finance & Accounting category.
