About Global Payment Team

The Global Payment team at ByteDance crafts comprehensive payment solutions such as payment acquisitions, disbursements, transaction monitoring, management of payment methods, foreign exchange conversions, accounting, and reconciliations to provide users with a seamless and secure payment experience across ByteDance platforms including TikTok.

Role Overview

We are seeking backend engineers passionate about constructing AI-driven infrastructure while enhancing system architecture, scalability, and stability. This position is centered on designing resilient backend foundations that power intelligent systems, improve service reliability, and support the sustainable growth of expansive platforms.

The selected candidate will engage with core backend systems enabling AI features in production, focusing on platform design, service dependability, performance fine-tuning, observability, and automation. This role demands dedication to tackling challenging engineering obstacles and creating technically robust and operationally reliable infrastructure.

Collaboration is key, as you will work closely with payment product teams, risk, compliance, finance, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), and global engineering units ensuring payment services remain secure, resilient, high-performing, and operationally excellent worldwide.

Responsibilities

• Architect, develop, and refine backend systems to elevate architecture, fault tolerance, and scalability, thereby enabling AI applications to function efficiently and effectively.
• Create foundational tools for high-availability services, distributed scheduling, data workflows, and platform automation such as improving monitoring, observability, alerting systems, incident response protocols, and root cause analysis.
• Conduct analyses of production incidents and new functionalities to plan enduring architectural enhancements.
• Manage critical production incidents impacting essential payment system services through shift rotations.
• Offer mentorship to interns concerning related technical topics where applicable.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, or Software Engineering.
• Proficient programming skills in at least one of the following languages: Go, Java, C++, or Python.
• Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, operating systems, computer networking, and databases.
• Excellent problem-solving capabilities coupled with a strong sense of ownership and ability to articulate ideas clearly.
• Effective cross-functional communication and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with AI infrastructure, machine learning platforms, or intelligent systems engineering.
• Background in payments, fintech, transaction platforms, banking integrations, or financial infrastructure.
• Demonstrated experience designing and managing distributed systems in production environments.
• Expertise in backend architecture, improving service reliability, and optimizing performance.
• Experience in enhancing system reliability, availability, observability, and operational excellence.
• Familiarity with Site Reliability Engineering practices, incident management, and disaster recovery planning.
