Backend Software Engineer - AI Infrastructure and Artifact Management

Team Overview

The Developer Services team is responsible for designing and maintaining core research and development infrastructure that supports software delivery across multiple technology stacks and business units in ByteDance. Key focus areas include build systems, artifact lifecycle management, artifact distribution, and securing the software supply chain. The team aims to deliver scalable, high-performance, and user-friendly platforms that drive tangible business benefits.

Currently, the team is advancing AI-native infrastructure capabilities, including supporting large-scale AI training/inference workloads, managing AI-centric artifacts such as Skills and Plugins, and developing a company-wide Skill Market. Additionally, the team leverages emerging technologies like Agent Harness, closed-loop automation, context engineering, evaluation, and system observability to address real-world engineering challenges.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect and improve ByteDance’s R&D infrastructure covering build systems, artifact management, data distribution, and software supply chains to deliver reliable, efficient, and language-agnostic developer platforms.
• Develop scalable infrastructure supporting AI training and inference workloads. Optimize container image builds, artifact caching and distribution, storage solutions, and cross-region data transfers to handle high concurrency and large-scale throughput.
• Create and enhance an ecosystem enabling easy development, version control, publishing, distribution, quality assurance, and governance of AI Skills, plugins, and other extension formats through a public marketplace and private team workspaces.
• Innovate with AI technologies by designing domain-specific intelligent Agents that transform domain knowledge and system tools into actionable automated capabilities. Tackle challenges in build troubleshooting, operational monitoring, dependency updates, risk mitigation, fault diagnosis, and automated remediation, progressing towards closed-loop solutions.
• Design and optimize large-scale distributed systems to boost throughput, availability, observability, and developer user experience. Collaborate closely with engineering, security, infrastructure, and AI business groups to align with complex real-world requirements and scale new projects across the company.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or related discipline, with practical experience in designing and developing robust large-scale backend systems.
• Strong programming ability in at least one of Go, Java, C++, Python, or Rust, coupled with solid fundamentals in computer science and software engineering best practices.
• Understanding of distributed system principles and experience working on components such as storage, computing, task scheduling, caching, messaging, observability, or reliability improvements.
• Excellent problem-solving, system design, and implementation skills, with the aptitude to diagnose complex system issues and devise sustainable solutions.
• Genuine enthusiasm for technology, interest in integrating AI into software engineering, a proactive approach to learning, ownership mentality, and strong teamwork and communication capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Hands-on experience with DevOps, continuous integration/delivery pipelines, build and artifact systems, cloud-native technologies, or securing software supply chains.
• Practical knowledge of AI Agent frameworks, retrieval-augmented generation, tool integration, Skills/plug-in management, AI evaluation metrics, or AI system observability.
• Experience managing large-scale distributed or globally multi-region systems, infrastructure for AI training/inference workloads, or contributions to relevant open-source projects.
