Position Overview
The Associate Professor of Ophthalmology will function as a senior academic and clinical leader at a premier NABH-accredited, multi-speciality 500-bed teaching hospital located in Northeast India. The role emphasizes delivering advanced medical education to undergraduate and postgraduate students while providing expert ophthalmic care across outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and surgical settings. The position also involves active participation in clinical research and publication efforts to enhance departmental academic standards, under the regulatory oversight of the National Medical Commission.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Deliver comprehensive lectures, tutorials, and clinical training on ophthalmology to MBBS students in alignment with university curricula.
- Conduct postgraduate classes, seminars, clinical case presentations, journal clubs, and mentorship involving surgical skill development and research methodology.
- Participate in ward rounds with trainees to foster clinical reasoning and examination competencies.
- Provide specialist consultation and management for outpatient clinics, inpatient cases, and emergency ophthalmic situations, including ocular trauma and acute glaucoma.
- Perform and supervise ophthalmic surgeries during scheduled operating theatre sessions, supporting postgraduate clinical skill development.
- Contribute to academic governance activities such as curriculum development, exam setting, and academic assessments.
- Publish at least two research papers as a leading author in indexed journals, guide postgraduate thesis projects, and take part in departmental research initiatives.
- Support departmental administration, quality improvement programs, NABH accreditation activities, and continuous medical education events.
Required Qualifications and Eligibility
- MBBS degree from a recognized medical institution.
- Postgraduate qualification in Ophthalmology (MS, DNB, or MD) accredited by NMC.
- Teaching experience: minimum 4 years as Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology, or 5 years if appointed directly in a government medical institution; or equivalent military medical teaching experience; or 10 years as consultant/specialist in a government hospital with >220 beds with completion of requisite medical education courses.
- Minimum two research publications in indexed journals as one of the first three authors after appointment as Assistant Professor.
- Completion or willingness to complete Basic Course in Biomedical Research and Basic Course in Medical Education.
- Valid registration with the State Medical Council or National Medical Commission.
Skills and Competencies
- Expertise in cataract surgery (phacoemulsification), glaucoma diagnosis and treatment, retinal disease management, and ophthalmic emergency care.
- Proficient in slit-lamp and fundus examination, surgical training, and operation theatre supervision.
- Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching, clinical bedside instruction, curriculum development, and academic compliance with NMC guidelines.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and leadership skills with a patient-centered approach adaptable to a teaching hospital environment.
