We employ nearly 50,000 individuals united by a shared purpose: advancing a more sustainable world. Our approach promotes flexible and hybrid working options to help our employees balance health, safety, and productivity.

Role Overview

We are looking for a driven Senior Power System Engineer to join our Power Networks team in Auckland. This role supports grid connection efforts for large renewable energy projects within the National Electricity Market (NEM) and the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM). You will work alongside the Power Systems Technical Director performing system studies, regulatory compliance, modeling coordination, and commissioning tasks across renewable and traditional generation technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Assist clients through grid connection processes including feasibility studies, generator registration, and commissioning phases.
  • Manage connection inquiries and applications (R0 and R1), prepare GPS documentation, compliance reports, and contribute consultancy inputs.
  • Coordinate and review power system studies and grid modeling activities utilizing PSCAD, PSS®E, and DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
  • Support grid commissioning and compliance tasks such as hold point testing, R2 model validation, reporting, and plant alterations according to NER and relevant ESM Rules.
  • Produce technical documentation, reports, and regulatory communication.
  • Collaborate internally with development, engineering, and project teams to assist grid program scheduling and monitor risks.
  • Engage with stakeholders including AEMO, Western Power, VicGrid, network service providers, clients, and consultants.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of NEM/WEM frameworks, NER and ESM rules, and connection requirements.
  • Mentor junior team members in grid connection, modeling, regulatory compliance, and procedural activities.

Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with power systems analysis, grid connection studies, or renewable energy projects within the NEM and/or WEM.
  • Basic understanding of NEM or WEM, relevant rules such as NER or ESM, and network service provider protocols.
  • Familiarity with commissioning and hold point testing activities.
  • Proficiency in power system simulation software: PSCAD, PSS®E, or DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
  • Some experience in Python scripting.
  • Strong analytical skills paired with the ability to produce clear technical reports.
  • Effective communication abilities and eagerness to learn.

What We Offer

  • Exposure to high-profile renewable energy grid connection projects.
  • Mentorship opportunities with experienced engineers and technical leadership.
  • Structured career development including training and support for certification.
  • Chance to grow expertise in NEM and WEM power systems.
  • Lead and participate in projects advancing the low-carbon energy transition.
  • Flexible work arrangements and a supportive, values-based culture that recognises senior professionals.
  • A workplace that fosters inclusion, diversity, and respect, encouraging all team members to contribute fully.
