Overview
The Data, Digital & Cyber Legal team at AIG is looking for a seasoned Assistant General Counsel to provide expert legal guidance on cybersecurity, data protection, and artificial intelligence across the Asia-Pacific region. This role will serve as a trusted consultant to business, technology, and risk teams, assisting with strategic projects, regulatory adherence, and risk mitigation amid a dynamic digital regulatory environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise on legal aspects of cybersecurity risks, including incident response, ransomware, data breach notifications, and compliance requirements in APAC.
- Assist in drafting and negotiating technology contracts related to cloud, SaaS, outsourcing, and cybersecurity services.
- Contribute to cyber resilience frameworks, ensuring alignment with global regulatory standards such as MAS TRM, APRA CPS 234, and HKMA rules.
- Collaborate with IT Security and Risk teams to manage third-party and critical vendor risks.
- Provide detailed counsel on data privacy laws throughout APAC jurisdictions, including Singapore PDPA, Hong Kong PDPO, and Australian Privacy Act.
- Support cross-border data transfer policies, localization obligations, and intra-company data arrangements.
- Lead or assist in data protection impact and risk assessments for sensitive processing activities.
- Advise on customer, employee, and marketing data use ensuring proper legal bases and consents.
- Engage with regulators and internal audit groups on privacy and compliance issues.
- Offer legal guidance concerning AI deployment addressing governance, accountability, transparency, and bias prevention.
- Help establish policies and responsible AI frameworks to guide organizational AI use.
- Conduct legal risk evaluations for AI applications such as underwriting, claims automation, and productivity tools.
- Monitor emerging AI regulations and guidance throughout APAC and globally.
- Support digital transformation initiatives involving cloud adoption and data-centric business strategies.
- Draft and negotiate intricate agreements involving data processing, licensing, and technology services.
- Collaborate with business leaders to deliver practical, commercially aligned legal advice grounded in risk management.
- Work closely with global legal, compliance, risk, and IT teams to implement policies and standards, tailored regionally where needed.
- Provide training and raise awareness among internal stakeholders regarding cyber, privacy, and AI risks.
- Manage external legal counsel as required.
Candidate Profile
- Qualified lawyer with a minimum of eight years’ experience in-house or law firm specializing in technology, data privacy, and cybersecurity.
- Background in financial services, IT, or insurance sector preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of APAC data protection laws, cybersecurity regulation, and developing AI governance frameworks.
- Understanding of information security standards specific to financial services.
- Demonstrated experience advising senior leaders across diverse APAC regions.
- Proven ability to operate effectively within large, fast-evolving organizations undergoing significant transformation.
- Licensed or eligible for legal practice in Singapore.
- Fluent in English and Mandarin at a professional working level.
