Job description
Work Location and Project Duration
This role is based in Kampala, Uganda, with a project duration of 24 months and potential for subsequent work within the Department of State program.
Role Overview
The architect will serve as the project architect responsible for comprehensive architectural and construction quality assurance, management, and technical oversight of the Kampala project. The incumbent will conduct technical inspections, prepare detailed cost estimates, ensure contractor compliance with quality standards, and review project documentation to maintain strict adherence to project specifications.
Main Responsibilities
- Verify contractor adherence to contractual obligations and contract requirements.
- Review and interpret design and construction documents, including drawings, specifications, narratives, reports, and calculations.
- Conduct onsite construction observations to confirm proper installation and execution of construction components.
- Perform quality assurance activities, inspect contractor work, ensure corrective measures are applied, and review contractor submittals for compliance.
- Monitor contractor quality control and safety measures and evaluate installation practices on site.
- Track construction progress relative to the schedule and provide weekly progress reports with recommendations based on document reviews and field inspections.
- Perform detailed technical inspections documenting progress and identifying any non-compliance or issues, producing construction and photographic reports for management.
- Assess contractor remedies for identified problems and develop solutions in collaboration with project management.
- Review contractor shop drawings, submittals, material samples, technical documents, and coordinate with other disciplines when necessary to ensure contract conformity.
- Adhere to U.S. construction standards with up-to-date knowledge of accepted products and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Project Director.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Architecture from an accredited university.
- At least 7 years of experience working on construction projects comparable in scope and budget to this project; design office experience will not count.
- International or overseas project experience is preferred.
- Familiarity with international building codes.
- Proven ability to assess and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs).
- Experience reviewing design calculations and engineering data critically.
- Knowledge of construction safety regulations including EM 385-1-1 and OSHA standards.
- Proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
Desired Skills
- Experience with NOX, SPX, UTIL, CAC renovations, PKG, EOB renovations, perimeter wall, and site-related construction work.
Clearance and Travel
This position requires U.S. citizenship and an active U.S. Government security clearance at the Secret level with eligibility for Top Secret clearance. Travel requirements apply.
