About Toast and Role Overview

The Android Software Engineer will join the Guest Engagement team to create innovative guest interaction experiences aimed at attracting and retaining restaurant patrons.
Responsibilities
- Develop, optimize, and sustain robust, adaptable, and efficient Android applications operating on Toast POS devices deployed across thousands of restaurants.
- Deliver features throughout their lifecycle including design, deployment, performance tracking, and iterative improvements informed by user feedback.
- Implement superior user experiences using contemporary Android development standards.
- Collaborate proactively in a team-oriented environment passionately focusing on shared success.
- Design functionalities that elevate the dining customer experience.
- Engage closely with product managers, UX designers, QA teams, and participate actively in agile development ceremonies.
- Work alongside fellow engineers company-wide to continually enhance the Android platform at Toast.
Requirements
- Between 2 to 4 years of professional Android development experience using Kotlin and/or Java with practical experience deploying production applications.
- Proficient with current Android development tools and frameworks is mandatory.
- Enthusiasm for AI-powered development and familiarity or interest in utilizing LLM-based agents like Claude Code for pioneering workflows.
- Ability to consume and work with backend APIs such as REST and GraphQL services, with willingness to engage in full-stack tasks as needed.
- Adaptability to ambiguous scenarios and incremental software delivery in an agile setting.
- A strong commitment to user satisfaction and a passion for seeing products adopted in real-world environments.
- Solid grounding in software engineering principles including writing clean, testable code with unit tests and openness to integrating AI-driven development enhancements.
Technical Environment
- Android applications developed in Java and Kotlin running on-site at restaurants.
- Backend services implemented primarily in Java and Kotlin.
- Utilization of AI development tools such as Claude Code incorporated into daily workflows.
- Data storage utilizing PostgreSQL and DynamoDB.
- API interactions through REST and GraphQL protocols.

- This role requires working onsite at the Dublin office two days per week as part of a hybrid working arrangement.
