Vehicle Specialist

Position Summary

Join Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency as a Vehicle Specialist working mainly in Auckland and nearby regions to enhance commercial vehicle compliance and road safety. This permanent, hands-on role involves technical inspections, audits, investigations, and compliance initiatives geared toward reducing risks and fostering lawful land transport participation.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform thorough inspections and audits on heavy vehicles to ensure adherence to compliance standards.
• Investigate and evaluate potential risks related to commercial transport safety.
• Collaborate with vehicle operators, industry stakeholders, and partner agencies to encourage compliance through education, intervention, and enforcement actions as needed.
• Maintain accurate records, compile evidence-based reports, and exercise sound judgment in decision-making impacting road safety.
• Travel regularly within Auckland and elsewhere in New Zealand to conduct field and office work.

Candidate Profile

• Extensive experience inspecting heavy motor vehicles with a strong mechanical or workshop background and solid knowledge of vehicle systems.
• Well-versed in Certificate of Fitness (CoF) requirements, Vehicle Inspection Requirements Manual (VIRM), and vehicle compliance standards.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct audits, investigations, and apply relevant legislation and regulatory standards operationally.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, capable of managing challenging conversations and building productive relationships.
• Strong analytical skills, critical thinking, and proficiency in understanding and interpreting technical information and multiple IT systems.
• A proactive problem-solver dedicated to continuous improvement.
• Possession of New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering Level 4 or 5, or an equivalent qualification.
