Job description
Job Purpose
This role is designed to develop foundational skills for a Utility Operator working on the Pot Line through practical, on-the-job training. The operator will support Assistant Cell Operators, Cell Operators, and Cell Technicians in efficiently operating reduction cells to produce molten aluminium.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the PTM operator in safely changing anodes to the required specifications, including removing and replacing back pot shields, transferring anode reference marks, monitoring pot voltage, managing anode set logic, and dressing anodes.
- Ensure the pot beam raising process is conducted safely and according to established procedures.
- Prepare tapping holes before the metal tapping process.
- Skim crucibles to remove dross and maintain quality.
- Collect metal and bath samples for quality and chemical analysis purposes.
- Assist in varied tasks such as housekeeping, bath tapping/pouring, adding materials to pots, pot skimming, and pot redressing together with Cell Operators and Assistant Cell Operators.
- Help with cleaning gutters and basements within the potroom area.
- Participate in on-the-job training for Pot Tending Machines (PTM) as required.
- Clean crucibles and siphon tips as part of maintenance duties.
- Respond promptly and efficiently to anode-related issues aiming to reduce Perfluorocarbon (PFC) emissions.
- Perform additional operational tasks as assigned by the Shift Supervisor, including cleaning pot breaker tips, deck plates, and bumper plates.
- Ensure pot shields and doors are correctly placed and closed to minimize hydrofluoric acid (HF) emissions.
- Maintain high standards of 5S and overall workplace housekeeping.
- Actively participate in hazard identification and reporting to help lower incident rates, aiming for zero lost-time injuries (LTI).
Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum educational requirement: Secondary School Certificate.
- Preferably at least one year of experience in a heavy industry environment.
- Good physical fitness and readiness to work various shift schedules within the potrooms.
- Ability and willingness to learn and understand the aluminium smelting process.
- English communication skills are necessary.
- Completion of training and acquisition of operational skills on equipment such as Pot Tending Machines, Anode Beam Raising Equipment, and general potroom tools, vehicles, or machinery as needed.
