Position Overview - Utility Locator

Joining Aecon Utilities means abiding by principles of speed, intelligence, and safety while delivering projects. The Utility Locator role reports to the Locates Supervisor and focuses on locating underground utilities such as gas, electricity, telecommunications, water, and sewers in Ontario, specifically in the Ottawa and Cambridge areas. This is a unionized position requiring union membership upon hiring.

Key Responsibilities

  • Use utility record systems and electronic locating equipment to safely and accurately identify underground utilities.
  • Document and mark utility locations in the field using designated locate work management software and adhere to established documentation standards.
  • Efficiently complete locate requests assigned by Foreperson, Coordinator, or Superintendent with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Analyze infrastructure records to plan and execute utility locate tasks effectively.
  • Operate company vehicles safely, planning routes to and from work sites as needed.
  • Participate as a team member on locate project assignments when required.
  • Communicate professionally with superintendents, foremen, coordinators, clients, and internal personnel via verbal and electronic means.
  • Perform other assigned duties as necessary.

Candidate Profile and Requirements

  • Hold a valid Ontario (G) driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Exhibit strong self-motivation, organizational capabilities, and multitasking skills.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining productivity.
  • Be willing to work extended hours to meet strict deadlines.
  • Demonstrate accuracy and problem-solving skills under pressure.
  • Manage task prioritization effectively and meet required timelines.
  • Communicate professionally and courteously with customers.
  • Have proficient computer skills, particularly in work management software, email, MS Excel, and MS Word.
  • Experience in public and private utility locates, pre-engineering locates, and gas distribution third-party observation (Vital Main Integrity) is advantageous.
  • Prior construction industry experience is beneficial.
  • Possession of DPT Certification is considered a strong asset.

Additional Information

This position is newly created. The hourly salary range is $29 to $39 in accordance with the current Collective Agreement. Pay is determined by factors such as location, education, experience, skills, certifications, training, and role complexity.
