Position Overview
The Traffic Control Flagger is tasked with directing vehicular movement around construction and maintenance zones to ensure safety for workers and the public. Responsibilities include setting up and removing traffic control devices like signs, cones, and barricades, regulating traffic with stop/slow paddles, and communicating effectively with motorists and team members. This role demands physical endurance to stand and reach for extended periods, the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, and the capability to handle equipment weighing over 50 pounds.
Key Duties
- Deploy and retrieve traffic control devices to safely reroute traffic around work zones.
- Control vehicle flow using proper hand signals and traffic paddles.
- Maintain clear communication via two-way radios among team members.
- Stand, walk, and reach for hands and arms up to 10 hours daily.
- Lift, carry, and maneuver traffic control equipment weighing more than 50 pounds.
- Drive company vehicles to transport equipment between sites and conduct routine vehicle maintenance checks.
- Operate safely under exposure to weather elements, moving machinery, traffic, fumes, and noisy environments.
- Comply fully with company policies and perform other related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- Successful completion of background checks, including motor vehicle record evaluation.
- Compliance with drug testing and federal Department of Transportation (DOT) standards.
- Proper use of personal protective equipment such as safety boots with toe protection, hard hats, safety glasses, and reflective vests.
- Proficiency in using two-way radios for team communication.
- Ability and willingness to work under various weather conditions and traffic scenarios.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills when interacting with contractors and colleagues.
- Capability to work effectively within a team environment.
- Strong attendance record, reliable transportation, and a solid work ethic are essential.
- Completion of the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) Flagger training and company-sponsored Defensive Driving courses.
- Flexibility to travel statewide with occasional overnight stays and availability to work nights and weekends as project demands dictate.
- Availability to participate in a rotating on-call schedule.
