Position Overview
The Traffic Control Flagger is charged with managing the flow of traffic at construction and maintenance work zones. This includes placing and removing signage, cones, and barricades to safeguard workers and the public. The role requires effective communication using hand signals and signs to guide vehicles safely through or around work areas. Candidates must be prepared to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and stand for long hours.
Key Responsibilities
- Install and remove traffic control signs, cones, and barricades around work zones to safely redirect vehicles.
- Manage traffic flow using stop/slow paddles to ensure orderly movement.
- Maintain clear communication with team members through two-way radios.
- Stand, walk, and reach for up to 10 hours per day as needed within work zones.
- Lift, carry, push, pull, and move equipment weighing over 50 pounds.
- Operate company vehicles to transport traffic control equipment to and from worksites.
- Conduct routine maintenance and inspections of vehicles to ensure operational safety.
- Work in exposure to outdoor weather, moving machinery, traffic, fumes, and airborne particles in a generally moderate to loud noise environment.
- Follow all company policies and protocols strictly.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- Successful completion of background checks including driving records and passing drug testing compliant with DOT standards.
- Adherence to safety standards by wearing required personal protective equipment such as safety toe boots, hard hats, safety glasses, and vests.
- Proficiency in operating two-way radios for team communication.
- Preparedness to work effectively in varying weather and traffic conditions.
- Strong communication skills to coordinate with contractors and team members providing excellent service.
- Ability to collaborate well within a team environment.
- Demonstrated integrity through excellent attendance, reliable transportation, and a committed work ethic.
- Completion of ATSSA Flagger training and in-house Defensive Driver training courses.
- Willingness to travel across the state, including overnight stays, and work flexible hours such as nights and weekends based on project needs.
- Availability for rotating on-call duty schedules.
