Role Overview
The Thrift Store Clerk is instrumental in ensuring excellent customer service, managing donated goods, assisting the Store Manager in daily operations, and maintaining stock presentation to boost sales and profitability.
Key Duties
- Receive, sort, and safely store donations in the warehouse area.
- Separate merchandise for sales, baling, or disposal, and prepare seasonal items for storage.
- Hang clothing by size, attach price tags following pricing guidelines, and organize merchandise appropriately on racks and shelves.
- Replenish inventory to meet set targets and maintain attractive merchandise displays.
- Process sales transactions using cash, debit, and credit methods, including handling exchanges and community vouchers per organizational policies.
- Provide courteous and prompt assistance to customers both in-person and over the phone, supporting the organization’s mission and values.
- Maintain store cleanliness and safety standards, including floors, bathrooms, outside premises, and work areas, as scheduled.
- Perform opening and closing duties as directed and participate in other assigned cleaning and maintenance tasks.
Working Environment
The job is based in retail and warehouse settings, involving exposure to odors, various temperatures, garbage, and truck fumes. Employees must be able to stand for long periods while frequently bending, twisting, crouching, and reaching. The role requires lifting items up to 30 pounds and flexible scheduling including retail hours and Saturdays.
Qualifications and Experience
- High school diploma completion is required.
- At least one year of relevant work experience, including cash handling and sales abilities.
- Experience using cash registers and electronic payment systems is preferred.
- A demonstrated appreciation of The Salvation Army’s mission and a willingness to support its goals.
- Compliance with occupational health and safety standards and The Salvation Army’s policies is mandatory.

- Strong verbal and written communication abilities coupled with excellent listening skills.
- Ability to work as an engaged team member and represent the organization professionally.
- Self-motivation, discipline, integrity, adaptability, and respect for authority.
- Maintaining confidentiality and participating in orientation and performance evaluations as required.
- Provision of a satisfactory background check through authorized channels is required prior to employment.
Compensation
The position offers a salary range starting from $16.82 up to $25.23 per hour, dependent on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate qualifications.
