Role Overview

The Shift Supervisor supports the Store Manager by managing daily operations to ensure seamless service in the thrift store. When not supervising, the role functions as a Sales Associate.

Key Duties

  • Engage positively and courteously with customers and donors.
  • Safeguard the condition and integrity of donated goods.
  • Accurately complete all customer transactions, including cash and debit sales.
  • Help meet store budget targets by maintaining high customer service standards.
  • Open and close the store in accordance with established procedures as needed.
  • Handle raw materials by unloading, sorting, pricing, packing, and storing donations.
  • Be knowledgeable about stock to respond effectively to customer inquiries both in person and via phone.
  • Maintain store security by monitoring activities within the premises.
  • Manage merchandise safely and orderly, assisting with stock rotation.
  • Support inventory control by receiving, sorting, and pricing items following direction.
  • Assist with store layout and window and merchandise displays to attract customers and keep the store tidy.
  • Replenish inventory levels as directed by supervisors and remove merchandise from the sales floor when required.
  • Ensure proper sorting and processing of donations complies with quality standards.
  • Maintain a clean and organized store appearance, including dusting, sweeping, mopping, restocking shelves, and tidying.
  • Adhere strictly to store policies and procedures.
  • Assist with inventory reconciliation tasks such as cycle counting.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to both guests and donors.
  • Act as Team Lead or Working Supervisor in the Store Manager’s absence.
  • Provide operational training to staff when necessary.
  • Promote a safe, healthy work environment by complying with health and safety regulations.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Work Relationships

Internal collaboration with NRO Administration and thrift store management and staff. External interactions include donors, clients, and contractors.

Supervision and Reporting

Reports directly to the Store Manager with no direct reports.

Financial and Material Responsibilities

  • May provide guidance to others on various procedures.
  • Handles moderate material responsibility and may occasionally manage petty cash.

Working Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Full-time role based in a typical store setting.
  • Frequent physical exertion including lifting up to 30 pounds unaided, bending, twisting, pushing, standing, and walking.
  • Regular exposure to dust, fumes, and temperature variations.
  • Required to meet established deadlines.
  • Potential for interpersonal conflict with various stakeholders including guests, donors, vendors, and colleagues.
  • Job includes both varied tasks and repetitive duties.

Education and Experience

  • Completion of some high school education is required.
  • At least two years of experience in a store or warehouse setting.

Skills and Capabilities

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate within a team.
  • Physical ability to frequently lift and carry up to 30 pounds independently.
  • Detail-oriented with high attention to accuracy.
  • Commitment to understanding and supporting The Salvation Army’s mission and values.
  • Compliance with Occupational Health & Safety Act and related policies.

Additional Information

The position is located at Airdrie Thrift Store, 1-125 Main Street, Airdrie, AB T4B 0P7.

The salary range for this role is between $19.19 and $24.00 per hour with a maximum of $28.79, with placement based on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate qualifications.
