Technician, Coating

Overview

The Technician in Coating is responsible for preparing and applying coating powders using precise formulations and executing spray recipes for various parts and components. This role includes operation and maintenance of coating and surface preparation equipment, programming robotic spray systems when applicable, and ensuring the quality standards are met throughout the coating process.

Primary Responsibilities

• Select and prepare coating powders according to established formulas and specifications, developing spray sequences as required.
• Develop, document, test, and control robotic programs for spraying applications if needed.
• Operate degreasing and blasting equipment to clean and suitably prepare surfaces for coating.
• Prepare and protect parts by masking using fixtures, rubber, tape, and other masking materials; maintain and report on the condition of tooling and fixtures.
• Set up and run manual, semi-automatic, and robotic spray systems to apply coatings to parts.
• Control bake/cure oven temperatures and record process times accurately.
• Remove masking material, clean overspray, and wash coated parts.
• Inspect surfaces before and after coating using visual and precision measuring tools like micrometers and calipers to ensure specification compliance.
• Maintain cleanliness and upkeep of spray equipment, fixtures, degreasers, blast cabinets, and complete daily 5S and preventive maintenance checklists.
• Change carbon columns and dust collector filters as per schedule and approved methods.
• Participate in audits, inspections, product introductions, and continuous process improvements.
• Cross-train in complementary skills to support production flexibility and assist in training other technicians.
• Report any unsafe conditions promptly and adhere to all safety regulations.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Technical and Physical Requirements

• Hold a NITEC certification in Precision Machining, Mechanical Engineering, or Mechatronics.
• Experience operating lifting equipment, degreasers, surface preparation tools, plasma spray and HVOF systems, industrial robots, and gas panels.
• Possession of relevant internal process stamps for operations.
• Skilled in precision measuring instruments and hand tools.
• Able to read, interpret, and understand engineering blueprints, company instructions, OEM manuals, and safety data sheets.
• Familiarity with production management computer systems and internal control systems.
• Physical capability to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance for about 25% of the workday.
• Ability to stand or sit for extended periods during shifts.
