Team Leader Ectotherms

Overview

Join Auckland Zoo as the Team Leader for the Ectotherms section, where you will guide a specialized team dedicated to exceptional husbandry and habitat design for over 60 species of cold-blooded animals including native icons like tuatara and exotic species such as the Sunda gharial and Galapagos tortoises. Situated in the vibrant city of Auckland, the zoo strives to connect people with wildlife to create a sustainable future through conservation, education, and scientific research.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and mentorship to the ectotherms team, nurturing a positive, inclusive, and high-achieving work environment aligned with Auckland Zoo’s strategic goals.
• Maintain and improve animal care standards, habitat maintenance, and species welfare through documented Species Action Plans and regular reviews.
• Collaborate across departments and with external partners to innovate exhibit design, enhance visitor engagement, and promote conservation advocacy.
• Develop team expertise and encourage participation in field conservation projects, research, and scientific publishing.
• Manage operational aspects including staff rostering, budgeting, training, compliance reporting, and contribute to departmental leadership including Animal Care in Charge duties.
• Work some weekends and public holidays as required.

Candidate Profile

• Experienced and confident leader skilled in motivating and managing teams to achieve common goals, with a proactive approach to resolving challenges and performance management.
• Extensive knowledge in animal management, particularly of ectotherms, with a commitment to innovation and continuous improvement in care practices.
• Highly organized with the ability to balance competing priorities, handle budgets, and delegate effectively.
• Strong communication abilities including scientific writing, public speaking, and proficiency in Microsoft Office and zoo animal records software.

Qualifications and Experience

• Undergraduate degree in biological or conservation sciences, or a Certificate in Zookeeping or equivalent qualifications and related experience.
• A minimum of eight years working experience in zoos or related fields.
• At least five years’ demonstrated expertise in the husbandry and welfare of various ectotherm species.
• Proven leadership history in a line management role, including recruitment, performance management, and staff development.
