Position Overview
The City of Victoria is seeking a skilled Street Cleaning Operator to join the Engineering & Public Works department. This position involves operating various street cleaning machinery and vehicles to maintain cleanliness on sidewalks, streets, and public areas. The role requires adherence to scheduled routes and effective handling of equipment for refuse collection and cleaning duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate street cleaning equipment including sidewalk sweepers, refuse packers, trucks, and cranes to clear litter and debris.
- Use hand and power tools such as power washers, backpack blowers, brooms, and rakes to clean sidewalks and bus shelters.
- Remove graffiti with specialized cleaning agents and replace damaged concrete litter containers.
- Perform snow and ice removal activities using shoveling and chemical ice melters as needed.
- Conduct minor maintenance on equipment and vehicles, including cleaning, washing, and routine inspections for fluids, belts, hoses, and lights.
- Report any damage or repairs required to supervisors and mechanics.
- Maintain accurate daily equipment logs and time sheets.
- Respond promptly to emergency situations including spills, dead animal removal, and traffic control assistance.
- Notify relevant departments of damage to city property such as potholes, broken fixtures, and graffiti.
- Keep records of areas cleaned using a master street map.
- Perform additional duties as assigned when qualified.
Working Conditions
- Physical demands include frequent heavy lifting, operating equipment from awkward positions, and confined vehicle cab work.
- Mental focus during equipment operation and vehicle maneuvering is essential.
- Exposure to outdoor weather in all conditions, potential confrontation with the public, proximity to moving traffic, and unpleasant elements such as odors, dust, noise, and hazardous materials is frequent.
Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 10 education.
- Valid Class 5 B.C. driver's license.
- Minimum of two years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and experience considered equivalent.
- Ability to operate multiple types of cleaning equipment safely.
- Competence in filling out forms accurately and maintaining good public relations.
- Willingness to substitute in higher-level positions if needed.

- This position is open exclusively to current employees of the City of Victoria.
- The role operates on a continuous Monday to Sunday schedule, averaging a 40-hour workweek.
- Hourly wage is set at $34.89, aligned with Pay Grade 5 under CUPE Local 50.
