Role Overview
The Steward (Dishwasher) at The Cooper plays a vital part in maintaining cleanliness, sanitization, and organization within the kitchen and food preparation zones. This position ensures that all cookware, utensils, tableware, and kitchen equipment are properly washed and stored, supporting an efficient, safe, and hygienic working environment aligned with company standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in creating a welcoming atmosphere by facilitating smooth back-of-house operations.
- Uphold clean, orderly, and safe workstation conditions consistent with restaurant protocols and quality expectations.
- Identify areas for improvement and proactively suggest constructive solutions.
- Maintain professionalism, respectfulness, teamwork, patience, compassion, and proactive initiative throughout all tasks.
- Comply with all operational procedures, specifications, and training requirements.
- Represent the restaurant courteously and collaboratively with all team members and partners.
- Clean, transport, and store pots, pans, utensils, and tableware efficiently and correctly.
- Operate dishwashing machinery and designated sinks to cleanse soiled dishes, cookware, and equipment.
- Apply appropriate cleaning chemicals following OSHA standards for sanitizing kitchen prep areas and equipment.
- Set up, organize, and restock stewarding workstations with necessary items and gear.
- Maintain cleanliness of food service carts, walk-in refrigerators/freezers, service elevators, and loading docks.
- Provide sanitation support and assist culinary staff with special requests and end-of-shift duties.
- Ensure thorough daily and post-shift cleaning and upkeep of kitchen spaces and equipment.
- Promptly report any shortages, maintenance issues, or safety concerns to supervisors.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Effective communication abilities and strong team collaboration skills.
- No previous experience required, though prior restaurant or hospitality experience is advantageous.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Availability to work diverse shifts, including weekends and holidays.
- Competence in safety protocols related to kitchen and service equipment.
- Capability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and adjust to shifting priorities promptly.
Physical Demands
- Standing on feet for extended periods (up to 8+ hours) during work shifts.
- Regular motions including bending, stooping, reaching, squatting, and stretching to complete cleaning/storage tasks.
- Lifting weights up to 30 lbs regularly and occasionally up to 50 lbs; pushing or pulling carts/equipment up to 250 lbs.
- Working in extreme temperatures, such as freezers at -10°F and kitchens reaching +110°F, for prolonged durations.
- Manual dexterity and fine motor skills necessary for handling small items and operating cleaning equipment.
- Mobility involving walking, standing, climbing stairs, and navigating crowded spaces efficiently.
- Tolerance for noise levels that may require raised voice communication.
- Good auditory and visual abilities essential for safe and effective task execution.
