Steward

Position Overview

Operating continuously throughout the week, this role demands flexibility with shift timings and durations. The Steward is responsible for cleaning and sanitizing all kitchen areas and efficiently operating dishwashing machinery, while strictly adhering to company policies, brand standards, and applicable governmental regulations. Immediate reporting of emergencies, damages, safety hazards, and any deviations from set procedures to management is essential. Maintenance of professional appearance with uniforms and name tags, as well as ensuring courteous and knowledgeable guest interactions, form a crucial part of the role. Confidentiality of company and guest information must be upheld at all times.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Efficient operation of dishwashing machines including correct rack loading and silverware pre-soaking; washing of various kitchen items like dishes, pots, utensils, glasses, and silverware.
• Maintenance of the mop station including mops, buckets, brooms, and cleaning solutions; thorough sweeping and mopping of floors.
• Immediate cleanup of spills to keep floors safe, clean, and dry.
• Cleaning of walls, tables, racks, sinks, floor mats, and disposal areas, including polishing stainless steel surfaces.
• Scheduled or assigned cleaning tasks of ovens, hoods, filters, drains, steam tables, and vents.
• Emptying, cleaning, and returning trash cans to kitchen area.
• Participation in special cleaning tasks and projects as directed.
• Punctuality and adherence to uniform standards during scheduled shifts.
• Attendance at departmental meetings as required.
• Demonstration of positive, professional communication with guests and colleagues.
• Reporting guest dissatisfaction or unusual incidents to management promptly for corrective action.
• Compliance with safety, sanitary, security, and emergency protocols, including writing shift reports when necessary.
• Pre-approval from management before leaving the work area.
• Engagement in task forces or committees and execution of other assigned responsibilities.

Qualifications and Skills

• High school diploma or relevant experience considered.
• Familiarity with hospitality industry standards is beneficial.
• Capability to provide friendly guest service and follow cleaning procedures accurately.
• Competence in operating dish washers, burnishers, steam cleaners, cardboard bailers, mops, and proper use of cleaning products.
• Strong organizational skills and efficient time management.
• High attention to detail and the ability to work effectively in fast-paced environments.
• Professional demeanor with good listening and communication skills.
• Ability to handle physical aspects such as standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 100 lbs, and exposure to heat, chemicals, odors, and noise.
• Legal ability to work within the jurisdiction.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

This physically demanding role involves frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, reaching, pulling, pushing, kneeling, and lifting up to 100 lbs. The work environment includes indoor and outdoor hotel areas with possible exposure to cleaning chemicals, extreme temperatures, and loud noises. Protective equipment and safety precautions are mandatory.
