Overview
The Algorithms team develops advanced algorithms and builds the infrastructure to support science models aimed at enhancing the Kindle reading experience. Collaborating across diverse Kindle technologies and scientific disciplines, the team focuses on optimizing the software development lifecycle benefiting engineers and the wider engineering community.
This role involves full ownership of systems ranging from algorithms, model building, system infrastructure, author and publisher dashboards, data stores for quality issues, testing, to maintenance. The manager will lead Software Development Engineers, Quality Assurance Engineers, and Business Intelligence/Data Engineers. Close collaboration with the Science team is a key aspect.
Role Expectations
The ideal candidate is passionate about creating new products, features, and services from scratch while effectively managing ambiguity and rapid development cycles measured in weeks. The position includes planning and executing technology projects and operational initiatives, building and managing a team of top-tier engineers applying strong design and implementation methodologies, and shaping product vision and roadmap across stakeholders.
The role requires extensive experience in designing highly scalable systems and applications, strong communication, exceptional people management skills, and a drive to deliver results quickly. Candidates should value complex systems software, be customer-focused, and committed to building quality software that meets operational objectives.
Basic Qualifications
- At least 7 years of software engineering experience
- Minimum 3 years managing engineering teams
- Over 8 years leading the design and development of multi-tier web services
- Familiarity with engineering best practices throughout the software/hardware/network development life cycle, including coding standards, reviews, source control, build, testing, certification, and operations
- Experience collaborating with product or program management teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Proven experience communicating with users, technical teams, and senior leadership to gather requirements, articulate software features, technical design, and product strategy
- Background in recruiting, hiring, mentoring, coaching, and managing software engineering teams to enhance their skills and effectiveness
