Senior Software Engineer, Query Execution

About the Role

The MongoDB Query Execution Team is seeking experienced software engineers to join in developing a modular, reliable, and high-performance distributed query system. The work involves implementing and maintaining query execution algorithms, enhancing query language features, optimizing database performance, and supporting customer-critical workloads.

This position is available remotely within Ireland or at our Dublin office, with relocation assistance offered.

Primary Responsibilities

• Analyze and enhance existing functionality of MongoDB's query engine.
• Deliver high-quality C++ code and actively participate in code review processes.
• Design, implement, test, and maintain new features focused on query performance, robustness, language enhancements, diagnostics for query issues, and integration with other products and tools.
• Collaborate effectively with peers to develop excellent technical solutions.

Candidate Profile

• At least 5 years of experience in systems programming.
• Familiarity with databases or data management systems is highly valuable but not mandatory.
• Demonstrated experience in developing robust, industrial-grade software.
• Strong foundation in computer science, particularly in data structures, algorithms, and software design/architecture.
• Experience working with large-scale codebases in compiled languages such as C++, C, or Rust.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Interest or experience in the theory and practice of database query engines; advanced degrees (MSc/PhD) in this area are a plus.

Expected Progress

• Within 3 months: contribute to projects designated for the next major software release and address bugs in current stable versions.
• Within 6 months: handle code reviews independently and deliver complex features while resolving bugs.
• Within 12 months: lead development of significant new features and mentor junior engineers.
