Overview
Join Canva's vibrant software engineering team based in Sydney, where you'll contribute to transforming how people experience design globally. This role embraces a hybrid work model, combining remote flexibility with on-site collaboration in our uniquely designed Sydney campus located in Surry Hills. Role and Responsibilities
- Lead key infrastructure projects that significantly impact all Canva engineers, focusing on enhancing developer productivity and operational scalability.
- Depending on team allocation, engage in one or more domains:
- Automation Pipeline: Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines, testing frameworks, release automations, and deployment safeguards.
- Developer Workflows: Enhance developer experiences throughout the software development lifecycle, including local and remote environments, build system efficiency, IDE integrations, and AI-powered development tools.
- Build & Collaboration: Manage source control tools, monorepo systems (notably Bazel), build platforms, code review processes, and developer environment setups.
- Focus on removing systemic bottlenecks by reducing build time, automating release workflows, and creating self-service platforms that empower teams to work autonomously.
Candidate Profile
- Extensive experience in Platform Engineering with proficient programming skills in Python and Go; familiarity with Java or TypeScript is advantageous.
- Demonstrated success in building and managing large-scale systems.
- Experience supporting vast engineering teams, ideally 1000+ engineers.
- Strong knowledge of cloud platforms with preference for AWS.
- Proven expertise in containerization and orchestration, particularly Kubernetes in production environments.
- Hands-on experience designing and maintaining sophisticated CI/CD pipelines such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, or Buildkite.
- Familiarity with monorepo build tools like Bazel or Gradle, with strong preference for Bazel.
- Expertise in observability practices including monitoring, logging, and alerting systems.
- Skilled in infrastructure as code using tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation.
Preferred Additional Skills
- Experience with release automation and mechanisms ensuring safe deployments.
- Background in developing developer tooling.
- Contributions to open source projects related to infrastructure or developer tools.
- Experience integrating AI/LLM technologies into developer workflows.
- Worked on improving build performance and large-scale test infrastructures.

The Developer Experience (DevX) team simplifies and accelerates software development at Canva by providing essential platforms, tools, and infrastructure. The group is divided into three specialized subteams: Automation Pipeline, Developer Workflows, and Build & Collaboration, all aiming to streamline development processes and empower engineers.
Team Focus
The Developer Environment team powers the development environments for thousands of engineers at Canva. Their work includes cloud-based dev environments, IDE tooling, and AI-enhanced workflows, using technologies such as AWS, Kubernetes, and Terraform, focused on delivering fast, reliable development tools and infrastructure.
