Role Summary

As part of the Data Platform Compute team, you will develop and manage the computational layer critical to all data practitioners at Bolt. Your work ensures the infrastructure that powers scheduled pipelines, notebooks, models, and experiments operates smoothly, efficiently, and independently.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect, implement, and maintain self-service data compute solutions leveraging Databricks, Airflow, and Spark, enabling data teams to easily provision, deploy, and troubleshoot their workloads.
• Ensure reliability, cost-effectiveness, and monitoring of over 800 daily Databricks jobs by creating systems to detect failures and identify improvement areas.
• Optimize Looker analytics performance and cost management for 4,000+ employees running 300,000+ daily queries spanning petabytes of data by managing routing, cluster sizing, and related trade-offs.
• Develop AI tools integrated into the platform, including setting up Databricks MCP servers and automation agents, to foster greater self-service capability without dependence on the compute team.
• Collaborate closely as a partner with diverse internal teams such as Analytics Engineering, Data Science, Machine Learning, Experimentation, Ingestion, Governance, and SRE Data groups.

Candidate Profile

• Minimum five years of professional software engineering experience, especially with large-scale distributed data systems or platforms such as Apache Spark.
• Strong proficiency in Python or a mainstream object-oriented programming language, demonstrating solid engineering principles and adaptability.
• Experience with modern data infrastructure tools like dbt, Databricks, Airflow or their alternatives.
• Practical experience deploying and managing Databricks in production environments, including Unity Catalog, cluster policies, serverless compute, and cloud cost optimization at scale.
• Good understanding of AWS foundational services (IAM, S3, EC2, networking) and infrastructure as code practices, preferably with Terraform.
• Commitment to engineering best practices including continuous integration/deployment, testing, and observability as central pillars rather than afterthoughts.
