Job description
About the Role
Cloudera is seeking a dedicated software engineer to join their Storage Engineering team, focusing on developing Apache Ozone, an open-source distributed object storage system. Apache Ozone is designed to support massive scaling across thousands of nodes and billions of objects, addressing challenges beyond those of traditional Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS). As part of this role, you will work on the core functionalities of Apache Ozone and Apache Ratis (an open-source RAFT consensus implementation), as well as contribute to HDFS, a widely deployed distributed storage system used by numerous Cloudera clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop core features for Apache Ozone and Apache Ratis.
- Engage in the enhancement and upkeep of HDFS.
- Contribute to building an innovative distributed storage platform with significant influence on big data and cloud computing landscapes.
Candidate Profile and Required Experience
- Holder of a Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate degree in Computer Science.
- Proven industry experience in software engineering.
- Strong backend development skills, preferably with Java expertise, or solid C++ proficiency combined with intermediate Java knowledge.
- Hands-on programming skills with understanding of data structures and computer science algorithms.
- Experience in system software design covering computer architecture, storage systems, networking, and IO subsystems.
- Meticulous coding standards, attention to detail, and commitment to quality.
- Effective verbal and written communication abilities.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
- Experience in designing and developing large-scale distributed systems with a focus on scalability, data replication, consistency, and high availability.
- Knowledge of distributed storage architectures, such as filesystems, database internals, no-SQL storage, or distributed hash tables.
- Expertise in performance optimization, bottleneck detection, and tuning.
- Familiarity with Apache Hadoop and related ecosystem projects like MapReduce, HBase, Hive, and Spark.
- Contributions to open-source projects are considered a significant advantage.
- Understanding of distributed consensus algorithms such as Paxos or RAFT.
