Senior Software Engineer

About the Role

Propellerhead is seeking a seasoned Senior Software Engineer to join our central engineering group under the direction of the CTO. This role focuses on investigating and shaping future technical strategies for our company and clients. Our engineering team develops foundational tools, software components, and technologies that empower service development teams.

You will lead projects from proof-of-concept to production, mentoring colleagues on the adoption of emerging technologies and methodologies. Additionally, you’ll assist both internal teams and clients in navigating the creation of effective, secure enterprise software solutions and deployment frameworks, especially in the AI era.

The team comprises passionate software artisans working with a high degree of autonomy rarely found elsewhere. Our work environment supports hybrid arrangements, blending office and remote work, but this position requires you to be based in Auckland, New Zealand, with regular office presence. We welcome applicants nationwide or internationally who plan to relocate.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct research and collaborate with the team to define technology solutions aligned with the CTO’s vision.
• Contribute actively to full-stack software design and development, encompassing code architecture, deployment, DevOps, test automation, and integration with third-party systems. Emphasis on leveraging large language models (LLMs) rather than extensive manual coding.
• Work closely with client stakeholders and Propellerhead colleagues to ensure alignment on solution design and project delivery within budgetary constraints.
• Lead the transition of diverse, polyglot codebases towards standardized use of Rust and TypeScript, promoting consistent and portable deployment setups, and disseminate technical knowledge across the organization.

Required Skills and Experience

• Minimum 7 years as a professional Software Developer/Engineer working on complex enterprise projects.
• Expertise in at least one major enterprise programming language and its ecosystem, such as C# with .NET or Java with Spring Framework.
• Proficient experience in low-level programming for applications or systems development, preferably with Rust or alternatively C++.
• Strong background in TypeScript and front-end frameworks like React, coupled with solid web application development understanding.
• Practical experience deploying applications to cloud platforms like Azure and/or AWS, including construction of CI/CD pipelines and use of infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform.
• Proven capability in designing software with distributed and asynchronous architectures, having contributed to microservices and messaging-based projects.
• Adoption of LLMs to replace traditional coding efforts, enhancing delivery speed and system security, with ability to produce clear design documentation aided by LLMs.
• Excellent communication skills to effectively translate between business requirements and technical tasks.
