Role Overview

The Payments FundsCore team at Grab integrates multiple payment systems into one unified platform supporting all transactions across internal teams and partners. This critical financial backbone encompasses the Payment Platform, Driver Payouts, Fee Platform, and ledger systems underpinning payments. The systems handle millions of transactions daily, requiring impeccable correctness, reliability, and scalability, utilizing concepts such as Idempotency, Two-Phase Commit, Event Sourcing, and the Saga pattern.

As a Senior Backend Software Engineer on the FundsCore team, you will take ownership of backend systems crucial to transaction processing and fault tolerance. Your role involves building scalable distributed systems, collaborating on platform evolution, and maintaining high standards for system correctness and performance. This position is based in Grab's Singapore office and reports to the Engineering Manager II.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop robust backend services aligned with business needs including reliability, security, and high performance.
• Produce clean, testable, and maintainable software addressing complex FinTech and payment platform challenges.
• Implement distributed system patterns such as idempotency, event sourcing, and the Saga pattern to guarantee transaction consistency.
• Work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver and enhance new platform features.
• Perform code reviews, maintain comprehensive technical documentation, and encourage best engineering practices.
• Troubleshoot complex production incidents, deliver fixes, and implement preventative solutions.
• Engage in architectural decisions shaping the technical direction of the services you support.
• Enhance system reliability by improving observability, automation, and operational workflows; participate in on-call rotations.
• Support deployment procedures and ongoing system health monitoring.
• Mentor junior engineers and interns to foster continuous learning and professional growth.
• Stay updated with emerging technologies and responsibly leverage Generative AI tools to boost engineering efficiency.

Qualifications and Skills

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Minimum five years of relevant software development experience.
• Strong proficiency in Go preferred; or expertise in Java or other major programming languages, with commitment to continuous professional development.
• Solid foundation in computer science fundamentals including algorithms and data structures.
• Ability to address edge cases, failure modes, and design robust recovery mechanisms.
• Expertise in writing efficient, maintainable, and test-covered code applying SOLID principles and appropriate abstractions.
• Understanding of clean architecture, design of data-centric applications, and handling large-scale data processing.
• Practical experience with large distributed systems, relational and NoSQL databases, caches, and RESTful/gRPC services ensuring data integrity.
• Hands-on with microservices architectures, cloud services (e.g., AWS), and modern DevOps practices.
• Knowledge of designing systems compliant with observability, availability, security, data governance, and regulatory standards.
• Ability to create and maintain clear technical and operational documentation including runbooks.
• Experience leveraging Generative AI tools responsibly to enhance productivity and project delivery.
• Prior exposure to FinTech and payment systems is an advantage.
