Job description

About Halter

Halter is dedicated to empowering farmers and graziers to operate highly productive and sustainable farms. Our innovative technology enables cattle to move calmly and autonomously without traditional methods like quad bikes or fences, revolutionizing grazing practices globally. Our team thrives on tackling challenging problems in a high-performance culture supported by renowned investors. Data is central to everything we develop, continuously integrating behavioral, location, health data from cattle collars, remote sensing, and pasture information to enable smarter farming decisions and efficient product scaling.

Role Overview

As a Senior Data Engineer with strong backend expertise, you’ll be an essential part of our Data Engineering team, building robust pipelines to integrate diverse data sources seamlessly. Collaborating closely with machine learning, product, and platform teams, you will design scalable, observable, and maintainable systems that can handle billions of events daily. Your work will directly impact global farming practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect, develop, and manage scalable data pipelines ensuring reliable data flow from various sources to insights.
  • Make strategic data modelling decisions focusing on clear, reusable schemas and scalable infrastructure.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to guarantee data accessibility, accuracy, and readiness for teams’ needs.
  • Leverage AI tools such as Claude Code or Cursor to enhance pipeline development speed while maintaining clarity and adaptability.
  • Implement comprehensive data quality measures including validation, monitoring, and alerting to pre-empt issues.
  • Define and improve organizational data engineering best practices balancing immediate delivery and long-term sustainability.
  • Mentor engineering peers via design discussions, code reviews, and extensive knowledge sharing.
  • Remain actively involved in data product development and infrastructure reliability, especially under scaling challenges.
  • Enhance testing methodologies, continuous integration/deployment workflows, and data infrastructure patterns.

Candidate Profile

  • Extensive experience in building and operating critical data pipelines incorporating batch and streaming processing techniques.
  • Deep familiarity with data engineering standards such as modelling, data transformation, orchestration, and quality control.
  • Proven background with cloud platforms, ideally AWS services like Athena, S3, Kinesis, SQS, and SNS; adaptable knowledge of comparable tools accepted.
  • Expertise in creating observable, testable, and debuggable data systems.
  • Product-oriented mindset with strong interest in the purpose behind delivered solutions.
  • Comfortable navigating uncertainty and making pragmatic decisions in ambiguous situations common in innovative environments.
  • Highly motivated by meaningful impact, with bonus consideration for genuine interest in agriculture.
  • Outstanding collaborator who shares knowledge generously and communicates clearly with a humble approach.
  • Passionate about the craft of data engineering and eager for continuous learning and growth.

Employee Benefits

  • Complimentary daily snacks and beverages to maintain energy throughout the workday.
  • Health and wellbeing support through partnership with Southern Cross Health Insurance.
  • Comprehensive parental leave policies including 6 months fully paid for primary caregivers and 4 weeks fully paid for secondary caregivers, alongside other family support benefits.
  • Annual self-development allowance of $1,000 to support personal and professional growth.
  • Flexible wellness leave and unlimited paid annual leave recognizing the importance of rest and recovery.
  • Competitive remuneration package combining salary, benefits, and employee stock ownership plan.
