Senior Data Engineer - BI

Role Overview

We seek a seasoned BI Developer proficient in designing, creating, and optimizing advanced business intelligence solutions leveraging Power BI, Power BI Report Server, SSRS, SQL Server, and DAX within an on-premises Microsoft BI environment. This position requires close collaboration with business stakeholders, data engineers, and data architects to deliver secure and governed dashboards, paginated reports, semantic models, and actionable insights.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and sustain dynamic interactive dashboards and paginated reports using Power BI Report Server and SSRS.
• Work closely with business teams to gather reporting needs, establish KPIs, and convert requirements into scalable BI and ETL solutions.
• Create and maintain standardized measures, KPIs, calculations, and semantic data models.
• Conduct thorough source-to-target and source-to-report reconciliations ensuring data and report accuracy.
• Implement Row-Level Security, manage access controls, versioning, and oversee change management across BI assets.
• Write advanced SQL queries, stored procedures, views, and facilitate data extraction processes.
• Enhance performance for reports, DAX formulas, SQL queries, semantic models, and ETL workflows.
• Utilize dimensional modeling principles such as star schemas, fact and dimension tables, slowly changing dimensions, and surrogate keys.
• Perform detailed exploratory data analyses to reveal trends, detect anomalies, assess risks, and identify new business opportunities.
• Partner with data engineering and architecture teams to align BI solutions with organizational data governance and standards.
• Provide training and support for business users to enable effective self-service analytics within governed frameworks.
• Engage in peer code reviews ensuring conformity to BI, ETL, and development practices.
• Diagnose and resolve issues related to data, report accuracy, performance, and user access in coordination with respective teams.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Statistics, or related disciplines.
• Between 6 and 8 years of proven experience in Business Intelligence, Data Integration, or Data Analytics roles.
• Strong expertise with Power BI and experience publishing reports to Power BI Report Server.
• Proficient in SSRS including designing paginated reports.
• Advanced knowledge of DAX expressions including calculated columns, measures, and KPIs.
• Extensive experience with SQL Server including complex joins, stored procedures, views, CTEs, and query optimization.
• Solid understanding of dimensional modeling and data warehousing concepts.
• Hands-on implementation of Row-Level Security in Power BI.
• Background in ETL processes and data integration methodologies.
• Excellent analytical problem-solving capabilities and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Strong communication and presentation talent.
• Experience in financial domains such as financial services, investment banking, banking, or fintech is advantageous.
• Experience with Power BI Report Server administration (scheduling, subscriptions, folder security, access management) is a plus.
• Familiarity with regulated environments, data classification, sensitivity labeling, and access governance enhances candidacy.
• Experience with Talend or comparable enterprise ETL/data integration tools is beneficial.
• Relevant certifications in Power BI, Microsoft BI, Data Analytics, or related fields are preferred.
