Senior Applied Scientist - Search Relevance

Overview

The Amazon Search team designs advanced search and advertising technologies used globally by millions of customers, ensuring a fault-tolerant and high-performance experience. As the company expands rapidly across new products, countries, and customer segments, delivering high-quality search results is critical. The Search Relevance group in India focuses on accelerating Amazon's growth while enhancing search at launch, innovating scalable machine learning ranking models and evaluation frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop machine learning ranking models specifically for product search to improve relevance and customer satisfaction.
• Create innovative ranking features by integrating recent academic research advancements in machine learning.
• Formulate and test hypotheses that guide product and business strategies, working closely with engineers to ensure low-latency predictions and system scalability.
• Design elegant, user-centric solutions to complex search challenges to enhance the overall customer experience.
• Own end-to-end development cycles, including system design, coding, impact analysis, A/B testing with result interpretation, deployment, and monitoring production code handling billions of search queries.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with engineers and teams across Amazon to solve complex design and technical challenges.
• Provide technical leadership by mentoring peers, setting high quality standards, and driving delivery on ambitious, large-scale projects.
• Cultivate curiosity and continuous learning by engaging with diverse teams such as systems engineers, data scientists, and analysts, and leverage Amazon's extensive technical resources effectively.
• Maintain a strong customer focus by reverse engineering problems and devising scalable, effective solutions.

Required Qualifications

• Over six years of professional experience building machine learning models within business applications.
• Advanced degree: Master's or PhD.
• Proficient programming skills in one or more of the following: Java, C++, Python, or equivalent.
• Solid knowledge of neural networks, deep learning techniques, and general machine learning concepts.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Hands-on experience with machine learning libraries and frameworks such as R, scikit-learn, Spark MLLib, MxNet, Tensorflow, numpy, and scipy.
• Familiarity with large-scale distributed data processing systems like Hadoop and Spark.
