About Hato Hone St John

Since 1885, Hato Hone St John has been dedicated to serving New Zealanders, currently employing nearly 12,000 staff members throughout Aotearoa. Our mission encompasses responding to emergency 111 calls, health education, facilitating access to health services, and monitoring health to positively impact our communities daily.

About the Role

The Security Operations Manager will spearhead the continued growth and sophistication of our cybersecurity operations capabilities, safeguarding the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of our systems, information, and services. This newly created role offers a chance to define and enhance our security operations function. You will lead an evolving team, collaborate closely with strategic partners, establish robust best practices, and adapt our defenses in an ever-changing threat landscape.

Your responsibilities include managing daily cybersecurity activities and teams, overseeing incident response, vulnerability management, and monitoring efforts. You will advance governance, risk management, compliance, and continuous enhancements. Building strong relationships with vendors, managed service providers, and SOC partners is essential. Providing expert security advice across technology initiatives, infrastructure, cloud platforms, and emerging technologies will also be key. Additionally, you will promote a proactive security culture through education and engagement, lead metrics reporting and performance tracking, and contribute strategically to the organization’s cybersecurity roadmap.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Demonstrated leadership in cybersecurity management roles, preferably with experience in health or emergency services.
  • Comprehensive expertise in security operations, incident response, vulnerability management, and cyber resilience.
  • Familiarity with major security frameworks and standards such as HISF, NZISM, NIST, ISO 27001, or CIS Controls.
  • Proven experience supporting security compliance, audits, and assurance activities.
  • Strong stakeholder management coupled with the ability to translate complex technical risks into business language.
  • Capability in leading and nurturing technical teams.
  • A practical, risk-aware approach to solving security challenges.
