Safety Technician

Job Overview

The Safety Technician role is dedicated to aiding the deployment and maintenance of health, safety, fire prevention, and environmental protection protocols within the designated hospitals and centers. The position involves performing regular inspections, tracking conformity with safety standards, supporting accident investigations, enhancing fire and emergency preparedness, and ensuring a secure environment for patients, visitors, staff, contractors, and property.

Primary Duties

• Carry out routine safety assessments across hospital facilities including clinical, administrative, warehouse, and utility spaces.
• Detect and document unsafe conditions and behaviors.
• Oversee the implementation and follow-up of corrective safety measures until resolved.
• Engage in environmental tours and safety audits to monitor compliance.
• Verify adherence to hospital safety policies and guidelines.
• Inspect fire safety equipment such as extinguishers, hose reels, emergency exits, doors, and alarm systems, ensuring emergency routes are clearly marked and unobstructed.
• Participate in fire drills and emergency response exercises, maintaining detailed records of fire safety inspections.
• Spot and immediately report any gaps in fire prevention systems.
• Supervise correct usage of personal protective equipment and encourage safe work habits among personnel and contractors.
• Contribute to hazard identification and risk assessment efforts, and partake in mitigation activities.
• Assist in accident and incident investigations including evidence collection, interviewing affected individuals, preparing reports, and tracking remedial actions.
• Monitor contractor adherence to safety mandates, conduct safety inductions, and confirm proper PPE use and compliance with procedures.
• Support emergency response operations, evacuation drills, and ensure functionality of emergency equipment.
• Inspect hazardous material storage compliance, maintain Material Safety Data Sheets accessibility, and help conduct training on chemical safety, hazardous waste handling, and response protocols.
• Maintain comprehensive records of safety inspections, audits, incidents, and training. Generate periodic safety performance reports and ensure documentation readiness for accreditation audits.
• Assist in new employee safety orientation, and promote safety awareness and training initiatives to cultivate a robust safety culture.

Qualifications

• Diploma in Occupational Safety, Industrial Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Fire Safety, Engineering Technology, or related disciplines.
• Mandatory Fire Safety Certification.
• Preferred Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• A minimum of two years’ experience in safety-related roles, preferably within healthcare or hospital environments.
• In-depth understanding of occupational health and safety principles, fire safety standards, emergency preparedness, risk assessment techniques, hospital safety accreditation requirements, incident investigation, inspection, and reporting.
• Strong communication, interpersonal skills, keen observation, analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Capacity to work independently and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.

Physical and Work Environment

• Capability to perform thorough site inspections including climbing stairs and accessing service areas across hospital premises.
• Willingness and ability to respond to emergencies, including working shifts, weekends, or on-call schedules as needed.
