Safety Technician

Overview

The Safety Technician serves a critical role in promoting and maintaining health, safety, fire prevention, and environmental safety standards across assigned hospitals and centers. The position involves ensuring compliance with safety policies and regulatory standards, conducting inspections, assisting in incident investigations, and supporting emergency preparedness activities to secure a safe environment for everyone within the healthcare facilities.

Key Duties

• Perform regular safety inspections in various hospital areas including clinical zones, offices, workshops, warehouses, and utility plants.
• Identify hazards and unsafe behaviors, and ensure corrective measures are tracked to closure.
• Engage in environmental rounds and comprehensive safety audits to maintain adherence to established protocols.
• Inspect fire safety equipment such as extinguishers and alarm systems; verify accessibility and condition of emergency exits and routes.
• Assist with fire drills, emergency response exercises, and maintain detailed records of fire safety measures.
• Promote proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and advance safe work practices among personnel and contractors.
• Support hazard identification, risk assessment, and mitigation efforts within workplace environments.
• Aid in investigations of incidents including accidents, injuries, and near misses by gathering evidence and reporting findings.
• Oversee safety compliance of contractors, providing safety inductions and monitoring the use of PPE and safe working procedures.
• Participate actively in emergency preparedness and disaster management protocols, facilitating evacuations and ensuring readiness.
• Conduct inspections related to hazardous material storage and assist departments with Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) maintenance.
• Assist in training programs focusing on chemical safety, hazardous material handling, spill response, and emergency procedures.
• Maintain comprehensive documentation including safety inspections, incident reports, audit findings, and training records for accreditation purposes.
• Engage in safety orientations for new hires and safety awareness campaigns to foster a culture of safety.

Qualifications & Experience

• Diploma in Occupational Safety, Industrial Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Fire Safety, Engineering Technology or related disciplines.
• Mandatory Fire Safety Certification; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
• At least 2 years of relevant experience in safety, occupational health, fire safety, facilities management, or engineering maintenance, preferably within healthcare settings.

Skills & Knowledge

• Understanding of occupational health and safety principles and fire safety regulations.
• Proficiency in hazard identification, risk assessment, and emergency preparedness processes.
• Familiarity with hospital accreditation standards concerning safety and facility management.
• Competence in conducting incident investigations, safety audits, documentation, and reporting.
• Effective communication, interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and analytical problem-solving abilities.
• Basic computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office suite.
• Capability to work autonomously and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

Physical and Other Requirements

• Ability to conduct inspections across the hospital premises, including climbing stairs and accessing service areas.
• Preparedness to respond promptly during emergencies and participate in shift or on-call schedules as needed.
