Job description
Role Overview
We are seeking a motivated Recycling Lead Hand to oversee sorting operations at our Charlottetown facility. This position emphasizes hands-on leadership, ensuring quality compliance and smooth workflow on the recycling line.
Core Responsibilities
- Engage actively on the floor by performing primary sorting tasks, leading by example to keep the line moving efficiently.
- Operate and adjust recycling machinery safely across shifts, managing start and stop procedures responsibly.
- Maintain strict adherence to company quality standards by guiding sorting staff on proper material separation.
- Communicate operational updates including material changes, workflow issues, and personnel matters clearly to management.
- Assume shift supervision duties during supervisor absences, managing daily floor activities and team assignments effectively.
- Act as the primary contact for operational questions, emergencies, and escalation during shifts.
- Complete precise end-of-shift documentation including reports, timekeeping validation, and production tracking when covering shifts.
- Ensure shift readiness through confirming sufficient sorting staff before shifts begin and request adjustments as necessary.
- Provide training to new sorters and continuously assess team productivity to maintain operational excellence.
- Promote and enforce a safety-first culture aligned with company safety programs.
- Strictly implement Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO) policies and procedures to safeguard operations.
- Oversee proper sign-out and consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) among all floor personnel.
Qualifications
- Minimum education requirement: high school diploma; post-secondary education considered advantageous.
- Prior supervisory experience, acting lead roles, or senior line worker responsibilities preferred.
- Experience operating recycling machinery highly beneficial.
- Forklift certification required or willingness to obtain certification.
- Ability to manage floor operations independently and display strong leadership initiative.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills are essential for staff and management interaction.
- Proven technical skills for safe operation of facility equipment.
- Physical capability to handle frequent lifting and moving of materials up to 60 lbs in a fast-paced industrial setting.
