Helper

Position Overview

The Helper role involves collecting solid waste and recyclable materials from customer locations or curbside, supporting vehicle operation, and maintaining safety and cleanliness standards during waste collection routes.

Core Responsibilities

• Retrieve solid waste and recyclables from customer premises or curbside as applicable.
• Load waste into rear or side compartments of waste collection trucks.
• Separate recyclables and place them into designated truck compartments when applicable.
• Support the driver by directing vehicle backup and maneuvering in tight spaces.
• Use truck equipment to compact refuse efficiently.
• Check waste vehicle equipment (broom, shovel, etc.) before departing branch.
• Report any customer-related issues promptly to the driver.
• Identify and tag prohibited waste items, notifying the driver and removing them from waste containers.
• Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and equipment inspections in line with company and government regulations.
• Collaborate with supervisors to enhance route efficiency.
• Maintain set route quality standards.
• Wear required personal protective equipment consistently (gloves, reflective vest, safety glasses, boots).
• Maintain professional behavior, appearance, and interaction with customers and the public while on route or in uniform.
• Support keeping the vehicle’s cab and exterior clean.
• Assist with sorting, cleaning carts, warehouse cleaning, pallet and container stacking, and cardboard compactor operation when necessary.
• Participate actively in safety and branch meetings.
• Perform additional tasks as assigned by management.

Qualifications and Experience

• High school diploma or GED preferred but not mandatory.
• Between one and three months of related experience or training is desirable but not required.
• Possession of a valid driver's license is advantageous but not obligatory.
• Must satisfy the Company's criteria for safety-sensitive positions.

Required Skills and Capabilities

• Ability to communicate effectively in reading, writing, and speaking.
• Capacity to follow instructions and work independently with limited supervision.
• Competence in operating equipment necessary for the job.

Physical and Mental Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift while working outdoors about 90% of the time.
• Capability to use hands and fingers, kneel, crawl, talk, hear, climb, and balance.
• Visual acuity including close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
• Ability to regularly lift or move up to 65 pounds unaided.
• Ability to push or move up to 100 pounds with assistance.

Working Environment

• Frequent exposure to loud noise, humid and variable weather conditions including rain, storms, extreme temperatures, mechanical parts, vibrations, chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles.
• Work occurs outdoors up to 100% of the time.
• Work involves continuous routing away from the branch location throughout the day.
• Occasional work at elevated or precarious heights.
• Constant exposure to motor vehicle traffic conditions.
• Generally noisy environment.
