Project Subject Matter Expert - Civil Engineering

Overview

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is responsible for powering Microsoft's cloud infrastructure. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team delivers complex, multi-discipline, large-scale and multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We seek a driven, highly motivated individual to help build the datacenters underpinning Microsoft's world-leading online services. The ideal candidate will have considerable experience working in teams with deep technical knowledge, particularly in site development, utilities, and infrastructure design. This role involves ensuring that datacenter services are resilient and scalable through close collaboration with service teams. It presents opportunities for professional and technical growth, technical leadership, and leading the delivery of Microsoft’s top-tier datacenter designs.

Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate civil engineering efforts related to datacenter development projects.
• Support civil design activities from site due diligence, master planning, detailed design through construction and project handover.
• Work alongside the Global Technical Excellence, Global Strategy, and DCE Operations teams to develop datacenter designs from basis of design (BOD) through issue for construction (IFC) and construction administration phases until completion.
• Manage concurrent civil design deliveries ensuring alignment with project scopes, timelines, and budgets.
• Provide expert technical guidance to external vendors including professional civil engineers, architects, and structural engineers.
• Collaborate with site selection, operations, security, design, and external stakeholders during all phases from conception to IFC for new datacenter projects and major upgrades.
• Implement best practices for Health & Safety throughout the project life cycle.

Qualifications

• A degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent professional registration such as Chartered Engineer, or progressing towards registration.
• Proven substantial experience as a Civil Engineer, including senior leadership roles in datacenter design or large-scale infrastructure projects.
• Strong expertise in underground utilities, roadways and parking lots, earthworks, geotechnical engineering, stormwater design, and flood analysis, plus coordination with other disciplines including structural, architectural, M&E, and telecom.
• Solid understanding of construction methodologies, sequencing, and site logistics.

Preferred Experience

• Knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles.
• Familiarity with 3D modeling tools such as BIM360, Navisworks, and Revit, as well as proficiency in Microsoft software for reporting and presentations.
• Proven ability to lead engineering teams in advanced engineering and operational procedures specific to large datacenter environments.
• Excellent problem-solving capabilities, sound judgment, teamwork, and decisive decision-making skills.

Compensation and Additional Information

The typical salary range for this position in Ireland is €77,400 to €130,000 annually. For related roles in the United Kingdom, the range is £74,700 to £122,600 per year. Eligible candidates may also receive benefits and additional compensation depending on the role.
