Outside Plant Telecom Engineer

Overview

Dedicated to fostering an inclusive culture, Microsoft is seeking an Outside Plant Telecom Engineer to design and engineer outside plant routing for metro and long-haul connectivity. Collaborating closely with sourcing teams, delivery staff, and fiber providers, you will ensure compliance with diversity standards. This role offers opportunities to work with Metro Dark Fiber, Long-Haul Fiber, subsea, and Lit Wave circuits, supporting a world-class network infrastructure in a flexible work environment based in Singapore.

Operating within Microsoft Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I), you will play a critical role in underpinning Microsoft's online services including Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Azure. CO+I supports ongoing personal and professional growth through training, career rotations, diversity initiatives, and certifications.

The Microsoft infrastructure is expansive, comprising over 200 datacenters in 32 countries with millions of servers, serving over 1 billion customers and 20 million businesses globally. Key Responsibilities

• Promote a culture emphasizing safety, security, and compliance across all data center operations.
• Design, plan, and engineer optical Outside Plant networks for both new and established regions.
• Collaborate across teams to ensure optical designs conform to Microsoft and industry standards.
• Maintain and update accurate fiber cable records.
• Review and approve vendor designs, conduct site inspections and permitting, and perform quality assurance checks.
• Interpret highway and road prints to identify conflicts with existing infrastructure and determine optimal routing.
• Analyze optical fiber test results for metro, regional, and long-haul networks to ensure compliance with Microsoft standards.
• Exemplify Microsoft's culture and values in daily activities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree plus at least 4 years of experience in engineering, telecommunication civil engineering program management, data analysis, or product development; or equivalent experience.
• Minimum 2 years managing projects involving multiple functions or teams.

Preferred qualifications include:

• Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years of relevant engineering or program management experience, or equivalent expertise.
• 6+ years of cross-functional project management experience.
• At least 1 year of experience in reading or writing code, such as creating sample documentation or product demonstrations.

Additional Conditions

• Must be able to successfully complete Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hiring and every two years thereafter.
