Overview

The Project Risk Manager plays a vital role in ensuring risk-informed decisions that protect all facets of project delivery such as cost, schedule, quality, safety, and contractual performance in large construction projects. This position supports senior project leadership by providing objective risk assessments, facilitating mitigation strategies, and ensuring implementation of effective risk responses to achieve measurable project success outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, execute, and supervise project risk management frameworks, methodologies, processes, and reporting protocols applicable across multiple projects.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive project risk registers, ensuring timely identification, assessment, ownership, and management of threats and opportunities throughout project phases.
  • Lead risk workshops, brainstorming sessions, and periodic risk evaluations engaging project teams and stakeholders for robust risk identification and control.
  • Align project risk practices with corporate governance policies and recognized international best standards.
  • Drive continuous enhancement of risk management maturity across projects.
  • Oversee quantitative and qualitative risk analyses including schedule and cost risk assessments using advanced methods such as Monte Carlo simulations and contingency modeling.
  • Ensure stakeholders are accountable for risk mitigation actions and escalate unresolved risk issues as necessary.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to project directors and senior leadership, providing insights and strategic guidance on risk exposure and mitigation strategies.
  • Facilitate effective communication of project risks and opportunities to clients, consultants, subcontractors, and partners.
  • Deliver executive-level risk reports, dashboards, heat maps, and performance trends to inform senior management and support audits or reviews.

Required Experience and Knowledge

  • Minimum of 15 years in construction, including at least 10 years focused on dedicated project risk management and 5 years in leadership roles.
  • Hands-on background in project delivery roles such as construction engineering, site engineering, planning, scheduling, cost engineering, or cost control.
  • Proven track record managing large-scale EPC, design & build, infrastructure, industrial, and civil mega-projects from a contractor perspective.
  • Strong expertise in project controls, scheduling, cost management, procurement, engineering, construction, and contracts administration.
  • Advanced capabilities in qualitative and quantitative risk assessment techniques, schedule and cost risk analysis, Monte Carlo simulation modeling, contingency planning, and risk-informed decision support.
  • Experience leading risk treatment initiatives and successfully implementing mitigation strategies.
  • Ability to influence project teams, constructively challenge assumptions, and cultivate a proactive risk management culture.
  • Experience advising project directors and executive management in strategic decision-making scenarios.
  • Familiarity with international standards and best practices in project risk management.

Education and Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction engineering, project management, or a related field is required.
  • Mandatory PMI-RMP (Risk Management Professional) certification.
  • Preferred master's degree in engineering, construction management, project management, or business administration.
  • Additional certifications like PMP, CCP, PSP, MRICS or equivalent are considered advantageous.

Technical Skills

  • Development of risk management frameworks and project-specific risk registers.
  • Qualitative and quantitative risk evaluation methodologies.
  • Schedule Risk Analysis and Cost Risk Analysis expertise.
  • Monte Carlo simulation and contingency modeling proficiency.
  • Implementation and oversight of risk mitigation plans.
  • Preparation of executive risk dashboards and comprehensive reporting.
  • Software proficiency with Primavera P6, Primavera Risk Analysis, Safran Risk, RIB Candy.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and data analytics techniques.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, leadership, negotiation, and facilitation capabilities.
