Job description
Role Overview
As a Product Designer at 7shifts, you will create impactful solutions genuinely needed by restaurants. Reporting to the Senior Director of Product Design and Research, you will take ownership of the entire design lifecycle—from engaging with restaurant operators to identify operational inefficiencies, through to launching and iterating the final product. Collaborating closely with your squad including Product Managers, Engineering Managers, and engineers, you will transform real challenges into launched experiences that enhance restaurant operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research by directly interacting with restaurant operators, managers, and team members to identify time and cost obstacles and use those insights to guide your design decisions.
- Rapidly prototype and validate concepts with customers early on, eliminating ineffective ideas before development and iterating based on feedback.
- Take full ownership of the design process, defining the experience and working alongside Product and Engineering teams throughout implementation to ensure quality delivery.
- Develop deep knowledge of your product domain to identify hidden opportunities that even customers might not articulate.
- Integrate AI tools throughout the entire design process—from synthesizing research and generating concepts to refining design patterns and contributing code—making AI an integral part of daily workflows.
- Enhance and contribute to the design system by sharing learnings and patterns from your squad to improve efficiency across teams.
- Participate actively in design reviews, openly sharing your design rationale and encouraging team-wide improvement through constructive critiques.
- Deliver frequent product releases, balancing speed and quality to ensure customers benefit swiftly yet reliably from your work.
Candidate Qualifications
- Minimum of three years experience as a product designer on cross-functional teams, preferably within SaaS environments.
- Proven track record of shipping products with a mindset where research, ideation, prototyping, testing, and iteration are continuous cognitive cycles rather than isolated steps.
- Demonstrated routine use of AI throughout design processes, capable of articulating how AI has transformed your workflow, including research synthesis, idea generation, and code contributions.
- Efficiency moving from initial rough sketches to polished, high-fidelity designs using Figma and Claude, collaborating effectively with urgency.
- Strong communication skills, able to clearly explain and defend design choices while remaining receptive to feedback.
- A portfolio that highlights your problem-solving approach and design thinking, rather than just final outputs.
Preferred Experience
- Exposure to the restaurant technology sector or prior work experience within the restaurant industry will be considered an asset.
Compensation and Growth
The salary range for this role is CAD 80,000 to 115,000 annually, representing the progression from core skill development to mastery in the position. New hires are typically placed at the accomplished level, bringing relevant experience and delivering impact with minimal ramp-up. Compensation is performance- and growth-based, increasing alongside skills and contributions. Placement within the salary band depends on expertise, knowledge, experience, and internal equity evaluations.
Our Commitment to Employees
- Opportunity: Join a rapidly evolving product delivering significant value to restaurants, providing ample chances to learn, grow, and shape the future of the industry.
- Challenge: Work on meaningful, complex problems in a fast-moving environment, employing critical thinking to create impactful solutions.
