Job description
About 7shifts
7shifts is a specialized scheduling and payroll platform aimed at empowering restaurant teams. Their app and tailored solutions save time, minimize errors, and help control expenses across more than 55,000 eateries. They are on a mission to simplify team management and boost restaurant performance, aiming to create a flourishing restaurant sector through integrated and engaged teams.
Role Overview
As a Senior Software Engineer focusing on mid-market solutions, you will be among the pioneering engineers forming the mid-market team. This squad builds core systems that cater to complex restaurant groups with multiple outlets, layered access controls, and consolidated visibility over their full operations. You will collaborate closely with a product manager, the data team, and report directly to the Director of Software Development.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement data structures and processing pipelines that enable rollup reporting for multi-location restaurant groups, handling all stages from initial schema design to beta release.
- Lead the architecture and initial development of a new permissions and authorization framework that supports scalable role-based access control, ensuring a smooth migration from existing systems.
- Collaborate with the product team to plan, estimate, and prioritize foundational projects, identifying tradeoffs and potential risks early on.
- Effectively communicate architectural choices and project status to engineering peers, data teams, and leadership, adapting plans as necessary.
- Integrate AI tools into the development workflow, including spec-driven development, assisted code generation, debugging, and other agent-driven methodologies.
- Elevate the technical quality of the team through code reviews, design discussions, and mentoring junior members.
Candidate Profile
- 7 to 10 years of experience delivering production-level software, with a strong focus on systems where data modeling or permissions and access control are fundamental.
- Proven ownership of end-to-end systems, from design to deployment, support, and evolution, including the capability to make pragmatic decisions in dynamic environments.
- Ability to transform complex, ambiguous challenges into clear, maintainable solutions without waiting for perfect information.
- Comfort with large and mutable codebases, exercising sound judgment to improve code incrementally while maintaining forward progress.
- Excellent technical decision-making skills balancing speed, code quality, performance, and maintainability, especially within defined timelines.
- Strong communication skills and aptitude for effective collaboration with engineering, product management, and data teams.
- Experience mentoring peers or facilitating technical discussions that enhance collective outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Practical experience with data lake or warehouse technologies such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or related AWS offerings.
- Background in domains where data accuracy, reliability, and real-time processing are critical business factors.
