Principal Process Design Engineer - Waste Treatment & Management

We seek a Subject Matter Expert in Waste Treatment and Management to join our process engineering team in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. This role involves designing and optimizing technologies for handling, treating, and recycling various waste streams while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead engineering teams in crafting tailored waste treatment, recycling, and disposal solutions for both hazardous and non-hazardous municipal and industrial wastes.
• Provide expert input to process engineering functions on Basis of Design documents, heat and mass balances, process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), technical specifications, operations, and control philosophies related to waste units.
• Engage actively in safety-related reviews including HAZID, HAZOP, and SIL to ensure design integrity, and participate in addressing recommendations derived from these assessments.
• Evaluate vendor technical proposals, clarifying bids as needed to ensure technical compliance and suitability.
• Ensure all waste management initiatives adhere to applicable environmental laws, standards such as USEPA and ISO, and local jurisdictional requirements, minimizing environmental and health risks.
• Partner with Process Engineering Leadership to oversee waste treatment projects across all phases—from conceptualization through detailed design—managing budget, schedule, resourcing, and stakeholder engagement.
• Validate client-provided waste characterization data and prepare reports for approval.
• Compile and present waste treatment technology selection dossiers for client endorsement.
• Review current waste treatment operations to identify enhancements for efficiency gains, cost reduction, and environmental footprint minimization.
• Coordinate with environmental engineers in conducting environmental impact assessments and recommending improvements for sustainability and waste reduction.
• Support integration efforts of multi-unit waste treatment facilities through close cooperation with process engineering teams.
• Provide mentorship to junior engineers and teams on waste management principles and practices.

Qualifications and Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Chemical, Civil Engineering or related discipline from an accredited university; advanced degrees preferred.
• Proven experience in waste treatment and environmental engineering, especially within industrial or engineering contexts.
• Expertise in diverse waste treatment methods such as chemical, biological, waste-to-energy, and recycling processes.
• Strong understanding of environmental legislation including hazardous waste regulations, disposal standards, and ISO certifications.
• Hands-on experience with environmental impact assessments (EIA) and life-cycle analysis (LCA) for waste management systems.
• Competence in project management: budgeting, scheduling, resource allocation, and cross-functional leadership.
• Skilled in managing client communications and maintaining strong professional relationships.
• Proficient in MS Office and engineering-specific software, including macro-enabled Excel for developing heat and mass balances in waste treatment facilities.
