Job description
Overview
The Principal Instrumentation Designer plays a crucial role in enhancing team effectiveness and facilitating knowledge exchange within the instrumentation design domain. Operating with significant autonomy under established procedures, this role often leads teams and suggests process improvements.
Key Responsibilities
- Create arrangement, conceptual, FEED, study, and detailed design drawings ensuring high technical standards and professional presentation for ease of construction.
- Develop clash-free 3D models coordinating with other disciplines.
- Deliver design outputs in accordance with project specifications, project managed procedures, and schedules within budget.
- Set priorities, manage time efficiently, and plan resource needs; lead small to medium instrumentation design teams, coordinating cross-disciplinary activities.
- Plan and oversee all aspects of discipline execution including scope, deliverables, schedules, manpower allocation in coordination with Engineering Management.
- Act as a communication hub between project teams, customers, vendors, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies.
- Interpret contract scope, identify early concerns, manage scope changes promptly including documentation and change notifications.
- Ensure effective interface management with other disciplines to produce clash-free design deliverables.
- Maintain detailed documentation of key communications and decisions, assist in proposal estimates and project scope changes.
- Raise technical queries to resolve ambiguities and uphold company standards.
- Conduct detailed reviews of designs, project schedules, vendor data, and ensure integration into discipline drawings and documentation.
- Maintain discipline master files, prepare material and weight take-offs, and support construction and commissioning activities as needed.
- Monitor progress, maintain deliverables register, and ensure compliance with project execution plans including archiving.
- Report status, challenges, and manpower or budgetary concerns to leadership.
- Lead design reviews, audits, mentor junior personnel, and provide leadership and technical guidance.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of departmental and global procedures, standards, and software proficiency.
- Support recruitment activities, provide employee performance input, and assist in manpower planning.
- Prepare and approve a wide range of instrumentation deliverables including 3D models, layouts, wiring diagrams, panel drawings, schematics, and material schedules.
- Participate in clash resolution and travel to fabrication yards or construction sites for mechanical completion and commissioning assistance.
Additional Responsibilities When Leading
- Serve as primary discipline contact for customers, vendors, and internal project teams.
- Manage comprehensive design budgets, work schedules, and staffing plans.
- Supervise and verify assigned tasks align with budgets and timelines.
- Maintain detailed design schedules, registers, forecasts, and progress reports.
- Proactively identify deviations requiring change orders, monitor KPIs, and encourage corrective actions.
- Coordinate with other discipline leads to ensure timely information exchange.
- Review and approve project-related documentation including schedules, estimates, procedures, and material take-offs.
- Lead discipline participation in audits and design reviews and assist in quarterly forecasting and manpower planning.
Qualifications
- High school diploma plus a technical diploma in Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical design or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 10 years’ industry experience with at least 5 years in oil and gas sectors.
- Extensive knowledge of industry detailing standards and codes, 2D and 3D drafting systems including AutoCAD, MicroStation, and experience with E3D and/or S3D tools.
- Proven leadership capability on projects, strong communication skills, and familiarity with QA systems.
- Experience in project coordination and execution, AutoCAD and/or Auto Lisp programming skills, and ability to develop 3D models and menus/macros.
