About the Role

JTB Architects invites applications for the position of Principal Architect to lead its Nelson studio. This leadership role provides an opportunity to guide and expand a dynamic team within a well-established New Zealand architectural firm renowned for delivering design-driven and technically sound projects. The company fosters a collaborative studio environment and maintains strong client relationships through thoughtful design outcomes.

The position offers a clear leadership path, including succession planning and the potential for share ownership for the right candidate.

Key Duties

As Principal Architect, you will be instrumental in overseeing the Nelson studio’s projects and team. Responsibilities include leading projects from the developed design phase to completion, ensuring design intent continuity, and maintaining high standards of design excellence, technical accuracy, and commercial success. You will collaborate closely with a Design Lead and play a significant role in studio development, supporting team members, and monitoring quality and performance outcomes.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Registered Architect status in New Zealand or an equivalent credential
  • Minimum of 12 years' experience with substantial project delivery expertise
  • Proven leadership experience managing and mentoring teams through successful project completions
  • Thorough understanding of New Zealand building codes and consent procedures
  • Commercial acumen related to managing project financials and performance
  • Strong interpersonal and communication capabilities for building trusted relationships
  • A natural leadership approach with commitment to team development
