Job description
Overview
We are looking for experienced Power or Protection Technicians to join our team, responsible for the maintenance, testing, installation, commissioning, and fault response of High Voltage protection and control systems. The role covers electricity distribution and transmission networks across Canterbury, West Coast, and Tasman regions.
This position involves a blend of fieldwork and project-based assignments focused on critical network infrastructure including substations, protection systems, SCADA, communications equipment, and other primary and secondary assets.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct maintenance, upgrades, commissioning projects, and emergency fault response activities across distribution and transmission environments.
- Support essential electrical infrastructure to ensure reliable network operation.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Current EWRB Electrician Registration with Practising Licence or eligibility via recognized overseas-qualified electrician pathway.
- At least three years of experience working with High Voltage protection and control systems on electricity distribution and/or transmission networks.
- Strong understanding of electrical power systems, substations, and protection schemes.
- Skilled in interpreting electrical drawings, schematics, protection settings, and control diagrams.
- Experience performing protection testing, commissioning, and fault diagnosis.
- Demonstrated commitment to health, safety, and quality standards.
- Proficient communication and documentation abilities.
- Possession of a current full New Zealand Driver Licence or overseas equivalent convertible to NZ licence.
Preferred Additional Skills
- Experience in electricity distribution, transmission providers, electrical contracting, utility asset management, or engineering services supporting relevant networks.
- Expertise in High Voltage switching, outage management, and substation maintenance.
- Experience commissioning protection schemes on zone substations, grid exit points (GXPs), switching stations, or industrial power systems.
Employment Details
This is a full-time permanent role with a minimum 40-hour workweek. Hourly pay ranges from NZD 55.00 to 65.00 based on qualifications and experience.
Qualifications and experience required align with Protection Technician duties on distribution and transmission networks; overseas credentials will be assessed for equivalence. Consideration may be given to qualified overseas candidates per New Zealand immigration guidelines if no suitable local applicants are found.
